Every page is a thrill of lovely bright color. This book is filled with good advice and inspiration. The illustrations are amazingly diverse - many different pictures, usually (as opposed to 3 or 4 successive shots of the same picture at different stages).

The Conscious Mind: In Search of a Fundamental Theory (Philosophy of Mind), by David J. Chalmers

What is consciousness? How do physical processes in the brain give rise to the self-aware mind and to feelings as profoundly varied as love or hate, aesthetic pleasure or spiritual yearning? These questions today are among the most hotly debated issues among scientists and philosophers, and we have seen in recent years superb volumes by such eminent figures as Francis Crick, Daniel C. Dennett, Gerald Edelman, and Roger Penrose, all firing volleys in what has come to be called the consciousness wars. Now, in The Conscious Mind, philosopher David J. Chalmers offers a cogent analysis of this heated debate as he unveils a major new theory of consciousness, one that rejects the prevailing reductionist trend of science, while offering provocative insights into the relationship between mind and brain.
Writing in a rigorous, thought-provoking style, the author takes us on a far-reaching tour through the philosophical ramifications of consciousness. Chalmers convincingly reveals how contemporary cognitive science and neurobiology have failed to explain how and why mental events emerge from physiological occurrences in the brain. He proposes instead that conscious experience must be understood in an entirely new light--as an irreducible entity (similar to such physical properties as time, mass, and space) that exists at a fundamental level and cannot be understood as the sum of its parts. And after suggesting some intriguing possibilities about the structure and laws of conscious experience, he details how his unique reinterpretation of the mind could be the focus of a new science. Throughout the book, Chalmers provides fascinating thought experiments that trenchantly illustrate his ideas. For example, in exploring the notion that consciousness could be experienced by machines as well as humans, Chalmers asks us to imagine a thinking brain in which neurons are slowly replaced by silicon chips that precisely duplicate their functions--as the neurons are replaced, will consciousness gradually fade away? The book also features thoughtful discussions of how the author's theories might be practically applied to subjects as diverse as artificial intelligence and the interpretation of quantum mechanics.
All of us have pondered the nature and meaning of consciousness. Engaging and penetrating, The Conscious Mind adds a fresh new perspective to the subject that is sure to spark debate about our understanding of the mind for years to come.

From Library Journal
Chalmers (philosophy, Univ. of California at Santa Cruz) analyzes the mind-body problem in terms of that elusive relationship between the physical brain and conscious events. Focusing on subjective experience as such, he rejects all reductive (materialist) explanations for conscious experience in favor of a metaphysical framework supporting a strong form of property dualism. His theory is grounded in natural supervenience, the distinction between psychological and phenomenological properties of mind, and a novel view of the ontological status of consciousness itself. Chalmers uses thought experiments (e.g., zombie worlds, silicon chips, a global brain, and inverted spectra) and discusses such issues as causation, intentionality, and epiphenomenalism. Even so, the critical reader is left asking, How can physical facts be relevant to the emergence of consciousness beyond an evolutionary naturalist worldview. Ongoing neuroscience research may provide a sufficient explanation of consciousness within a materialistic framework. Nevertheless, as a scholarly contribution to modern philosophy, this is suitable for all academic and large public libraries.?H. James Birx, Canisius Coll., Buffalo, N.Y.

A very good book. I work in the field of consciousness ...
By y pinto
A very good book. I work in the field of consciousness research, so I guess I'm biased with a lot of background knowledge, but I'd say, for experts this book is excellent. Chalmers approaches this problem like a mathematician. He doesn't cling to intuitions or cherished beliefs, he simply constructs arguments with cold-hearted rational thinking. His main point can actually be summarized quite simply: we, as a matter of fact, cannot deduce experiences from functional interactions. We can deduce output, and other functions, but not experiences. This then suggests a simple implication: experiences, unlike normal material entities, are not encompassed fully by functions (although they clearly correlate with it).
I'd say you really appreciate this as someone working in the field (more maybe than if you don't), because the problems he predicts are exactly the problems that arise. Every theory of consciousness at some points hits a brick wall. Global Workspace: highlighted information is conscious; IIT: integrated information is conscious; recurrently processed information is conscious; attended or memorized information is conscious; information generating meta information is conscious; neuronal interactions at 40Hz generate consciousness, and so on.
The problem with every theory, in the end, is that the starting point seems arbitrary and not rationally explainable. Why should 40Hz oscillations lead to experiences, but 39 Hz not? Why can information not simply be integrated unconsciously? What's so special about memory that it requires consciousness (as opposed to calculating root squares for instance)?
These problems that we run into in the practice of consciousness research highlight Chalmers's points: there is, in our understanding, an unbridgeable gap between functions and experiences. This makes the problem of consciousness considerably more intractable then nearly all other scientific problems.

Well written and argued but ultimately unsatisfying as an explanation of consciousness
By Matthew Rapaport
I admit up front I'm a Chalmers fan and that is not to say that I agree with his many of his speculations concerning properties of the universe yielding consciousness. I like the way Chalmers angles at a subject and explores objections to his view at every step of the process. He does incorporate certain assumptions he fails to explore however and they turn out to be significant.

This is Chalmers' first book (1997) on consciousness, a subject he reprises in 2010 with "The Character of Consciousness" a book I reviewed some time back. In some ways, this book is a clearer exposition than the reprise. The subject matter is more clearly divided. In the first part of the book he argues that materialism must be false because consciousness does not logically supervene on physical process though it does "naturally supervene" on them. His arguments here are carefully crafted and reasonably convincing. He pays careful attention to distinguishing consciousness (the "what it is like to be" nature of subjective experience) from psychological or cognitive states. He is a little to quick here to define this line so sharply but he uses this clean distinction to get a handle on why it is so difficult to connect brain states directly to the subjective experience of consciousness. This line of argument leads Chalmers to a "property dualism" in which a new phenomenon, consciousness that is real but not physical nevertheless emerges from the physical, that is the causally closed physics of modern science. He uses the second half of his book, less persuasively, to propose a speculative solution. So how does this all go?

Chalmers posits a set of psychophysical or phenomenal laws in parallel with physical laws. These other laws are not merely aspects of physical law which physicists have not yet discovered (along lines of Thomas Nagel's "anomalous monism"). Rather they are a complete set of laws, independent of the physical that happen to exist in parallel with it. They are undetectable by physics and moreover they really do not have any effect on the evolution of the universe until the right kind of organization happens to come along (something that might not have happened)at which time they serve to connect up with the physical organization to evoke the new phenomenon of mind.

Chalmers glibly assumes that the laws of physics and the psychophysical are eternal. This assumption is problematic for various reasons not central to his theme here, but it does impinge on it. If the physical universe had a beginning, what sense can be made of laws existing eternally prior to there being anything for them to govern or describe? Where does eternality come from? Moreover, an "eternal laws" would imply that all the particulars of relations between particles, radiation, and fields of the physical universe (including the various arbitrary constants that, being what they are, allow for the development of galaxies, stars, planets, and even life) were not just accidents that could have settled into other values but rather had to come out as they did.

This is the important part. If only the physical laws had any effect on cosmological evolution up to the appearance of certain organizations then it is quite possible that those types of organizations might never have appeared (they are accidents of contingency). If that had been the history of our universe, then the psychophysical would have been entirely redundant. On the other hand, if the non-material laws had some influence on physical evolution, then that influence ought to be measurable, at least in principle. There is no evidence of such an effect in physics of course and Chalmers doesn't really care whether life and subsequent consciousness are pure accidents or were in some manner directed. It is the hypothesized connection between the physical and the psychophysical that gives him the "natural supervenience" of the mental on the physical his theory requires.

Perhaps an example of my own would make this clearer. Imagine physical law (eternal or otherwise)governs how hydrogen and oxygen interact to form water and produce its special properties. Now imagine that there is, in parallel with physical law, another law (call it XYZ) that is not physical and cannot be detected by any measurement. XYZ is entirely redundant to normal physics and the evolution of physical systems. But whenever liquid water is brought to a temperature of 300F, XYZ turns the water into a purple goo. Now normally there is no liquid water at 300F and so the XYZ law never has any effect on anything but it nevertheless exists along with the more conventional laws of physics that govern the properties of water. At some point in the evolution of the universe there come to be creatures who learn to put water under pressure and do bring its liquid state to a temperature of 300F. To everyone's surprise, the water turns into purple goo but it remains the case that as before XYZ remains strictly undetectable by physics. What Chalmers would say here is that purple goo does not "logically supervene" on the ordinary laws of physics because we can imagine liquid water at 300F without it becoming purple goo. But purple goo does "naturally supervene" on the laws of physics because XYZ always and automatically connects up water and purple goo whenever the physical conditions are made right.

My analogy goes only so far as purple goo is presumably a physical stuff while consciousness is not. Of course there is no non-physical XYZ that turns water into a purple goo. But Chalmers claims exactly this for the phenomenon of consciousness which is non-material (something for which he argues persuasively) and therefore demands a postulate of psychophysical laws which connect up with the physical under appropriate conditions resulting in a non-physical phenomenon. We can imagine all sorts of complex brain states and functional organizations existing, even having psychological and behavioral effects measureable by third parties, without there being any consciousness, that is any experience of what it is like to be a subject. But because psychophysical laws also exist (undetectable by physics), when and if sufficient functional organization comes along (whether in biology, computers, or even societies of persons) the psychophysical laws will be entangled (or activated or envoked) by the functional organization and map the physical organization into a subjective experience.

This is a proper "property dualism" for which Chalmers argues. It is a dualism because there is truly something different, that is not material, that emerges in the universe, and it is a "property dualism" because its dualistic (non-material) properties come not from some special antecedent source (for example God as in substance dualism) but from material physics albeit conjoined with psychophysical laws which are (a) non-physical, (b) eternal like the physical laws, and (c) the connecting link between the physical and the subjective-mental.

The well known dilemma of substance dualism is the "interaction problem" which challenges the doctrine on the grounds that there is no mechanism by which the physical can interact with the non-material mind stuff. For all his careful work in this book, Chalmers never appreciates the irony that his psychophysical laws must suffer from the very same interaction problem. He offers no mechanism by which this interaction takes place, that is, how it is that certain functional organizations of physical stuff become entangled with the non-physical psychophysical laws. In the end, therefore, while this book is a good example of philosophical exposition, it ends up being very unsatisfying as an explanation for consciousness.

Conscious Mind Searches for Its Transcendent Origin
By Alex Vary
In The Journal of Consciousness Studies, David Chalmers wrote: “ Consciousness poses the most baffling problems in the science of the mind. There is nothing that we know more intimately than conscious experience, but there is nothing that is harder to explain. All sorts of mental phenomena have yielded to scientific investigation in recent years, but consciousness has stubbornly resisted.” The mystery of consciousness revolves around the question: “How can living physical bodies in the physical world acquire such phenomena?” Chalmers favors the non-reductionist, non-physical approach which may ultimately provide pivotal concepts needed to resolve the question.

In The Conscious Mind: In Search of a Fundamental Theory, David Chalmers introduces the notion of the hard problem of consciousness. According to Chalmers, the hard problem of consciousness is explaining how we experience it with respect to: (1) sensory inputs and the mysterious modes of their neural processing and (2) qualia - phenomena where the processing is accompanied by ineffably subjective aspects of conscious experience which apprehend the redness of red, the beauty of mathematical forms, love, the selfness experience. These have a relationship with physical brain-states, but are not identical to brain states because they are transcendent - essentially objectively unmeasurable - states of consciousness.

Chalmers observes that subjective information processing invariably accompanies sensory and neural signal processing. We do not just retain visual sensations; we judge the quality of colors, the contrast of dark and light, the quality of depth in a visual field with meaningful images that are conjured up mentally, that are felt emotionally, and inspire experiential conscious thought. What unites these states of consciousness somehow transcends the physical sensory experiences.

Empirical science and neuroscience have attempted to explain the nature of conscious experience. But to fully account for conscious experience, Chalmers suggests that we need an extra ingredient to explain and elucidate the hard problem of consciousness. That extra ingredient should explain how accumulated experiences, arising in and retained by the brain, are elaborated, interpreted, and qualified by our consciousness.

Roger Penrose and Staurt Hameroff (Toward a Science of Consciousness), suggest that human cognition may depend on quantum wavefunction collapses in microtubules, the cytoskeletons of a neuron. Penrose and Hameroff suspect that wavefunction collapse in microtubules may be the physical basis of conscious experience. In The Conscious Mind, Chalmers writes that although “these ideas are extremely speculative . . . they could at least conceivably help to explain certain elements of human cognitive functioning.”

Our embodiment is primarily a survival machine with no inherent consciousness, a Chalmerian zombie. In The Conscious Mind David Chalmers describes an isomorph, “A zombie [that] is just something physically identical to me but which has no conscious experience ‒ all is dark inside.” In any case, survival machines are programmed to respond to and survive their environments, to replicate and evolve, without any urgent need to assume human consciousness or engage in social intercourse.

Chalmers argues for the transcendent nature of consciousness; insisting that “consciousness is simply not to be characterized as a functional property” and that, “No explanation given wholly in physical terms can ever account for the emergence of conscious experience.” In My Universe - A Transcendent Reality, author Alex Vary proposes a conceptual framework to help elucidate the transcendent nature of consciousness and its relation to the physical world. The proposed framework is based on deductions and information revealed primarily by distinct quantum phenomena which are demonstrably transcendent. An essential feature of the framework is the mesostratum; a signal transmission modality. The mesostratum machinery that Vary imagines offers an explanatory gap-filling linkage from a transcendent continuum to a physical neural discontinuum. Vary suggests ways to access the mesostratum, to explore it, to explain the nature of human consciousness; and cites examples of access to the mesostratum. Chalmers essentially intuits that non-physical agencies (perhaps mesostratum agencies) participated in the appearance and evolution of human consciousness. If mesostratum agencies modulate human consciousness then at least select humans should be able to reciprocally access, explore, and exploit resources of the mesostratum. Anecdotal examples are legion: prodigious savants, geniuses, virtuosos, such as Mozart, Goethe, John von Neuman.

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Gr 7 Up--Every year in Panem, the dystopic nation that exists where the U.S. used to be, the Capitol holds a televised tournament in which two teen "tributes" from each of the surrounding districts fight a gruesome battle to the death. In The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the tributes from impoverished District Twelve, thwarted the Gamemakers, forcing them to let both teens survive. In this rabidly anticipated sequel, Katniss, again the narrator, returns home to find herself more the center of attention than ever. The sinister President Snow surprises her with a visit, and Katniss’s fear when Snow meets with her alone is both palpable and justified. Catching Fire is divided into three parts: Katniss and Peeta’s mandatory Victory Tour through the districts, preparations for the 75th Annual Hunger Games, and a truncated version of the Games themselves. Slower paced than its predecessor, this sequel explores the nation of Panem: its power structure, rumors of a secret district, and a spreading rebellion, ignited by Katniss and Peeta’s subversive victory. Katniss also deepens as a character. Though initially bewildered by the attention paid to her, she comes almost to embrace her status as the rebels’ symbolic leader. Though more of the story takes place outside the arena than within, this sequel has enough action to please Hunger Games fans and leaves enough questions tantalizingly unanswered for readers to be desperate for the next installment.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Reviewers were happy to report that the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and all looked forward to the third book in the series after this one's stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was as good as the original book Hunger Games or should be viewed as somewhat of a "sophomore slump." Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss's romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons to the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire was still a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism in a way that will enthrall young readers without giving them (too many) nightmares.

An improvement in every aspect!
By Derek B.
All too often, I find that sequels just don't provide a worthy follow up to the original or that sometimes the original story is just so incomplete that I hardly have any desire to move forward for fear of never receiving a satisfying conclusion. For this reason, I often stay away from sequels and even series in general, at least in terms of books. I think this is part of the reason it took me so long to pick up Suzanne Collins' CATCHING FIRE (The Hunger Games Book 2) despite having read the original and seen both of the respective movies a long while ago. The CATCHING FIRE movie adaptation was one of the few movie sequels that I ever thought to be drastically better than the previous film in every way possible. That's not to say that it made me like the first any less, just that I felt it had improved in all aspects. And so I went into this book with timid excitement, hoping I would feel the same way.

The book version of this story impressed me exactly as I hoped it would. It is an improvement on Collin's already fantastic narrative that feels fresh and more mature while also allowing readers to spend more time with her fantastic characters, world, and story.

CHARACTERS
Katniss and Peeta are back for another adventure. They've done the impossible together and now they have returned home, but things will never be the same. They are locked into a false romance where Peeta now realizes that his affections towards Katniss are only reciprocated when the pair are in front of a camera. He is made to feel even more alone than he did at the start of the games while Katniss deals with her own set of issues. Gale is now referred to as her cousin despite that being far from the truth. On one hand, this makes it easier for Katniss to be seen with him, but it also means they will never be together since it is ultimately her destiny to marry Peeta, whether her feelings for him are true or not. She and Gale come to the realization that there is something between them and Katniss realizes that Gale is another boy in her life that she has been hurting.

Then there's the fractured relationship between the Capitol and the Districts which she is also forced to acknowledge when President snow appears in her home and threatens her loved ones if she doesn't play along with what he wants. Despite her surviving the Hunger Games tournament, the "games" aren't really over at all. She's still fighting for her and Peeta's lives, but now she has the lives of her mother, Prim, Gale, Gale's family, Haymich, and probably Peeta's family to worry about. She may also very well be fighting for the lives of every District in Panem. President Snow's role is quite big here which is a nice change of pace since he remained largely unseen in the first book. Then there's Plutarch Heavensbee, the new head gamemaker who is a bit more removed, but what parts he is in are quite good. Katniss also meets up with a variety of previous victors like the flamboyantly handsome Finnick, the aggressive Joanna, the clever Beetee, and deranged Wirress. Those who have already seen the movie know what circumstances Katniss meets these other victors under, but I won't spoil that part of the story since it is far more of a surprise in the book. The only other thing that can really be said is that each of these new faces is a wonderful addition to the cast and that they all have a lot to add to the story as a whole.

WORLD/SETTING
The world that Katniss returns to is not the same one that she left. She's a victor now which means she gets a fancy new home in a special section of District 12 and she must be part of the victory tour where the victor of the games visits each district and honors the fallen tributes before attending a lavish dinner party. It also means she will have to become a mentor to the future tributes of District 12. At least those are all of the things that would happen to a typical victor.

This year is different, this year there are two victors because of Katniss's defiance to the Capitol. Her refusal to play by their rules means that she has Peeta to go through all of this with, but it has also sets into motion events beyond what she would ever be able to predict. Uprisings have sprung up in several districts in the spirit of following Katniss's example. District 12 sees a stronger security presence which imposes brutal restrictions upon the citizen's way of life. Nothing Katniss does seems to be right and nothing she says can quell the anger that builds up against the Capitol. She finds herself in an impossible situation where the world of the games and the real world are now largely one in the same. Katniss never escaped the arena, only set it loose upon the world and now she is the symbol of a rebellion that threatens to bring end to Panem.

Although everything is different now, this book brings readers to a variety of places within Panem and introduces us to locations that were previously only mentioned. Collins paints each with simple, yet vibrant descriptions which will probably make you both happy and remorseful that they are on the brink of destruction. The destitution of 12 no longer seems as bad when other districts are portrayed as mammoth prisons where inmates are born into servitude of an unforgiving Capitol.

PLOT/TONE
The overall content and tone of this narrative is a few shades darker than the previous installment which probably says a lot considering the first one explored a gladiatorial tournament in which children fought to the death. Minor details aside, things are a lot more serious now since the stakes are so much higher. Before, readers worried about the lives of twenty four young tributes, but now they are presented with an entire world whose continued existence seems highly in question. Katniss, our once empowered heroine somehow seems so small now that the conflict involves forces far beyond her control. To be fair, they are beyond anyone's control, but Katniss finds herself especially vulnerable since she is the catalyst for all the terrifying changes going on around her.

Katniss also can't just fake it till she makes it anymore. Peeta and her have to face the consequences of their lovers routine in the arena and try to come to an understanding, if not a salvaged friendship. Gale's involvement adds further complication for Katniss's already overwhelmed set of teenage emotions. All the other characters are also a bit worse off this time around which adds an additional layer of edginess to it all. Some characters are more in the dark than others about the events happening around them which leads readers into an ever-spinning web of secrets, lies, and manipulation. Even having already seen the film, I felt delightfully in suspense the entire way through this book, partially in thanks to being able to experience the events through Katniss's point of view which offers a fresh take on things. Again, there are a number of really wonderful surprises in store and if you haven't already seen this movie, then I won't spoil them for you here. If you're already familiar with this story, then I can promise that this ride won't be any less enjoyable a second time around.

As a kind of aside to all this, it is worth noting that this book felt far less like a true YA novel than the first one did. There is significantly more nudity, stronger language and sexual references, and the depictions of violence are far more graphic this time around. Even the overall language and writing style that Collins employs feels quite a bit more grown up than her last book. Not that this series has ever really been known as kid-friendly, but parents might want to know that this one definitely pushes the limits of what can/should go into a YA novel.

CONCLUSION
I really do think this is a series that no reader should pass up on. If the first book didn't quite sell you, then I'd strongly urge you give this one a shot. If you loved the first, then it really only gets better here and I can honestly say that I am extremely excited to dive into the third and final book of this trilogy, though I may try and savor it a bit more whereas I kind of tore through CATCHING FIRE as though there was no tomorrow.

The plot is more serious, the writing style and content are more adult, the new characters are a win all around, and this is just a book that I will probably love forever.

more adult than the first one
By Sy
While the 1st book in the series is more obviously YA fiction, I was pleasantly surprised by the depths of more mature themes this second book touched. Other reviewers complain Katniss is too passive in this book, but frankly if they read the 1st book with more attention, they'd realize Katniss is the ultimate unwilling hero. Also she may be a good hunter and a good survivor but she is not the sharpest and most devious of minds. Also the only person she really cares for is her sister. People who have experienced hardship sometimes feel they are already overwhelmed by their own problems and will leave others to deal with their own. Some will even come to the point of despising those who can't fend for themselves in a "I did it, why can't you?" attitude I can certainly recognize. These traits are not, in my opinion, flaws necessarily, and make her more interesting and complex.
One thing I didn't like much was another round of Hunger Games. Here the author made the same mistake of so many other sequels, of taking a good idea and thinking that making it bigger, more complicated and more belabored will make it better. For me it didn't. The first arena was believable (I have gone camping enough times to easily picture it in my mind), but the second is just over the top and overdone.
If you read this book with some rabid fan attitude, where any departure from what you think the series should be is seen as sacrilege, then you may not like it. If you read it for pure entertainment, I think this is a very good sequel.

good first half but it got messy after that
By Chiek
The surprise element is gone after the excellent first installment. I was irritated by Katniss' insistent to keep Peeta alive while sacrificing herself in the process. While Coliins painted a virtuous Katniss who was selfless and saint like, it came across as pretentious and unconvincingly hollow. Why am I so harsh? Firstly, she didn't love Peeta. But more importantly, she had her little sister Prim, her mother and Dale to care about. Remaining alive is not selfish because she would be doing it for these three loved ones who are the most important people in the world to her. Thankfully, this hole was covered in the film itself. Egregiously, her fake pregnancy ruse was not uncovered at all in the book or the film. Just an unbelievable lapse by Capitol or by Collins given the futuristic premise and age of advance technology. So I will rate the film version superior to the book.

PINS, by Jim Provenzano

Acclaimed sports columnist and fiction writer Jim Provenzano's novel PINS tells the story of bigotry in athletics, and one very short boy who stands up to it.

Set in Little Falls, New Jersey in 1993, PINS weaves the classic story of a Catholic saint into a compelling modern life -and near-death- account of Joey Nicci, a fifteen-year-old Italian-American wrestler.

After befriending Donald "Dink" Kohrs, Joey and his new posse get involved in pranks and partying that eventually get out of control, resulting in the death of a maligned fellow teammate.

The ensuing legal battle and media frenzy alter Joey's life and his self- perception as a gay teenager while shattering his fragile love for fellow teammate Dink. Like his patron saint, his battle against his own teammates forces him to suffer for his beliefs. His survival becomes a literary miracle.

A compelling story of a loving yet confused family, coaches and teachers struggling with multiple issues of violence and homophobia amid the clan-like world of teenage athletes, PINS brings together elements now frighteningly common in the media; bullying jocks, assaults on weaker students, faculty and families unwittingly allowing such behavior.

Called "prescient" and "heartfelt" by two of today's leading writers, PINS layers symbols from the worlds of animals and religion, yet while achieving a unique literary style, it remains accessible to the group for whom it speaks - gay teenagers.

Review
"(PINS) deals realistically with Joey's coming out to his family and dealing with the court, the media, guilt, school and his relationship with Dink. PINS has a lot going for it, not the least of which include a likable protagonist and raging teenage hormones. It's not so much a coming out story, but it is a great gay coming of age story that deserves a space on your bookshelf." -- Drew Wilson, Out Front Colorado

"A heartfelt and touching story, unwaveringly authentic and compelling. His characters wrestle with each other, vividly, and also with larger issues of sexuality, faith and family." -- Michael Lowenthal The Same Embrace, Gay Men at the Millennium Editor, Flesh and the Word, Editor

"A presciently written novel of athletics in small town America, a grippingly real account and a chilling reminder of how far we still have to travel." -- Felice Picano Like People in History, The Lure, Ambidextrous

"In few cultural arenas is the thorny boundary between machismo and homophobia/philia crossed save in the most stereotyped fashion, Jim Provenzano's smart 'Sports Complex' column in the Bay Area Reporter being one notable journalistic exception." -- Dennis Harvey San Francisco Bay Guardian

PINS is a fast-paced and compelling tale focusing on wrestling in Provenzano's words, "the last bastion for boys who cannot stop playing around." -- The Record Courier, Dec. 16, 1999

PINSq, stands for 'Person In Need of Supervision.' It's also jock talk, a catchphrase of high school wrestling, the team sport that has Provenzano's teenage boys watching their weight like fashion models. By the end of the book, "pins" means, more grimly, the pins through a young trauma victim's neck, holding it straight.

Holding adolescent bodies together is one of the subtler motifs that play across Provenzano's coming-of-age drama.

Wrestling's the ultimate gay sport. But queer love is complicated, especially for 15-year-old jocks. Not until Joey and Dink's involvement in the beating death of the wrestling team's designated "faggot" can the two boys touch each other in a way that highlights love rather than competition.

Provenzano has a swift and flexible style that cuts against sentiment and reveals, in moments of grace, something like true feeling. He's also funny. He has an ear for teenage banter, and he's tartly lyrical about Jersey towns, Italian families and homemade mix tapes with titles like GRAPPLE and AURGH. Most urgent, he shows how gay bashing is still an outlet for kids who grew up in the so-called gay '90s. -- John Weir, The Advocate, Dec. 6, 1999

Inspired by real incidents of gay bashing in New York in 1992, PINS is a brilliant piece of fiction. The plot is very complex with many layers, each well-developed and passionately expressed. The depiction of the wrestling team and the pecking order of that culture is only one of them.

Dino is the real hero, as he fights hard to protect his first-born son from harm. The layer of Joseph's family life is real and sensitive. There are caricatures of coaches, jocks, reporters, and nosy neighborsall realistic to a fault.

The writing style is fresh and adds to the reader's experience; set up in three parts, with the protagonist's name changing in each part: Joey, Joseph, Joe. Provenzano is clever. In part two, for example, the twentieth chapter, "20/20" is actually a powerful critique of the media.

Readers will be proud of Joey Nicci, of his father Dino and even of Dink. No sensitive reader will make it to the end without giggling, anxiety, joy and tears. You'll be grateful to Jim Provenzano for sharing his novel with us. -- Eric Resnick, Gay People's Chronicle, Dec. 23, 1999

Jim Provenzano's debut novel finds love in an unlikely corner. PINS records a fumbling, tentative passion between 15-year-old Joey "Neech" Nicci and Donald "Dink" Khors, teammates on a wrestling squad in suburban New Jersey. PINS manages to break new ground by exploring the clannish, conflicted homoeroticism of wrestling culture.

Provenzano clearly loves their obsessive, sweaty world. Joey knows he's found a home within the practice room's "warm padded cell, moist, guy-scented, soft on the floor, walls, the last bastion for boys who cannot stop playing around." But his place on the wrestling circuit is far from comfortable or secure. Joey finds himself forced to take part in homophobic attacks on his team's weakest member. The hypocrisy demanded of Joey ultimately lead to devastating consequences.

While PINS does occasionally have the earnest feel of advocacy journalism, it stops short of becoming a public service announcement about gay teens and self-esteem. Provenzano avoids solemnity by tilting gently at the tacky clutter of adolescence. In the end, Joey's no saint; he's just a decent kid who loves his friend and who gets aroused watching "Who's the Boss?" reruns. -- John Perry, San Francisco Chronicle, Jan 14, 2000

With PINS, Provenzano tackles the homophobia in athletics. -- Mansfield News Journal, Dec. 12, 1999

From the Back Cover
Patron saints, headlocks, thrash metal, crash diets, dogpiles, nutpulls and only the occasional assault.

simply moving
By A Customer
i read about this novel in the magazine XY and went out in bought it not knowing very much about it at all. Pins was my first gay novel and im not sure if that is whats influncing my opinion of it, but i thought this book was amasing. as a highschooler who is active in school sports, i found this totally moving and touching. i completely connected with the characters and have been in many of joe's situations so i know how it feels. this novel comforted me and moved me in such a way that i started a gay straight alliance at my school and i couldnt be happier, all of my friend have read this book now and they are all better people for it. if you couldnt tell by this point....i highly reccomend this novel.

Completely amazing
By Mark A. MacDougal
I urge you to buy this book. I can't tell you how much I regret letting it linger on my "wish list" for so long. Mr. Provenzano's novel is nothing short of amazing. The writer's ability to describe the main character, Joseph, and his surroundings and feelings are brilliant. I found this story so moving that as I approached the ending I faced it with the same despair one feels knowing that their best friend would be moving away - forever. I miss Joseph and his family everyday since finishing the book. This is a real treasure of a book that I have urged all of my friends to read. If you enjoyed K.M. Sondlein's delightful, "The World of Normal Boys", then you will fall hard for "PINS".

An incredibly gripping story of family and love
By rick d.
PINS is an incredibly well written story about a young man who is forced to grow emotionally strong in a very short period of time. The themes of masculinity, strength, family, and religion all are addressed in this story of an Italian American high school wrestler. The writing is amazingly vivid, forcing you along with Joseph Nicci and his family & friends. Jim Provenzano writes with unbelievable depth about issues facing many young men without giving easy answers. This book should be read by young athletes, parents of athletes, and others who would relate to this internal struggle of family, religion, and that burning first love.
