This is a great study on the meaning of the Beatitudes and their application to our lives today. Our Bible Study group really found it gave us food for thought and made us reflect on the Beatitudes in a new light.

Realistic minimalism!

I am a 57 yr old grandmother who lived a minimalist lifestyle during the difficult years as a young, single mother. Having remarried in 1989 to the best man I have ever known, my life seemed to improve in leaps and bounds by having more financial stability, and the opportunity to finish my education allowing better career opportunities. We live in a small house that we remodeled to suit our needs when my boys were grown & I was able to retire last year.
I have often said that the best memories of my life were when my kids were small and I was poor. We would drive to the beach, with our basket of peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, koolaid & cut fruits, spend the day on a remote spot where there were no tourist attractions, just us and the beach. I made a lean to from an old tarp to create shade where my youngest would nap for hours. At the end of the day, we visited I a public bath house, showered off the sand & I dressed them in PJ' s for the hour drive home.
In the years since, I have bought all of the things, or been gifted everything I used to think I wanted, needed or thought I was supposed to have. But the strangest transformation began almost immediately after acquiring all the "stuff" I began to stay constantly stressed over where to put things, surprised that I really didn't love most of it and guilty to have been blessed yet ungrateful. I couldn't understand why, what was wrong with me? Well, your book, along with a few others, smacked me in the head with the understanding: I was perfectly NORMAL! THE CONSUMER IN ME WAS THE CRAZY ONE! Some books go to the extreme, but your book helped me define my own level of minimalism. I have completely decorated my sister's home with my rejects, I have made gifts of beautiful jewelry I never wear to friends and family and I no longer have ANY clothes I don't love or drawers overstuffed with stuff. I plan to finish after the overindulgence of the holidays have passed, and bring exercise, meditation and real joy back into my life. Thanks for the nudge I the right direction!...

Breath of Fresh Oxygen

I had not read a single post from his blog before purchasing this book. I was in for a pleasant surprise.

This book is extremely concise (less than a 100 pages), which I value in any blog post, article, or book on simplicity. Quality over quantity.

Which brings me to the next point, this book is on PRINCIPLES (as indicated by the title of the book), meaning it will teach you how to fish instead of just handing out fish. If you want someone to hold your hand, buy the Simple Living Guide (500 pages!) and she will direct step by step, dump your drawers out, separate into three piles kind of stuff. There are many blogs on declutting, and Miss Minimalist and Zen Habits will walk you through. There is no point in Joshua reiterating what countless others have covered in regards to clutter. He is simply here to introduce to you the simple life, offering principles that you'll want to keep for a lifetime. The benefits are immense.

BOOK UNFOLDING:

Book starts out with his story. I like the approach, makes you feel welcome. His stories are insightful and entertaining throughout the book. First story goes: some neighbor tells him about her minimalist daughter while he's spending time in the garage cleaning, yet another weekend gone.

He boils things down to the top reasons why you should simplify your life. He points you to his blog if you need more reasons. I was delighted to see the bullet point about simplifying so your kids don't have to rummage through all your stuff one day! Other minimalists don't touch on this important subject. All the junk piling up in my mother's house --- I wonder how I will counter that monumental task if my dad passes or if some tragic accident happens to both of them. It's not a delightful topic to think about, but it makes it easier on everyone if you prepare and figure out what really matters in life before you pass, not just for your sake, but for the environment and for your children.

Josh takes you through the pros and cons of capitalism. You hear both sides. There are pros and cons to everything. Going green has cons like less-than-baby soft toilet paper or having to lug your empty water can around instead of drinking out of throw-aways. When people write books about their ideas, they often leave the cons out. I like his balanced approach.

He then takes you into budget making (critical for a life of simplicity). His plan is the simplest I've come across. He mentions (wisely) that you can't just put $400 for food, because it varies from month to month. He implements savings and charity donations into his budget, so the rest left is free to spend. He's on the money!

The book covers these topics: Find clutter magnet spots in your house. Opt out of junk mail. Turn hangers around when using a garment to get a clue as to what you actually use every month (brilliant idea!). How to deal with simplicity with kids. How to manage enjoyable gift exchanges (clever points here). Buy quality. Don't get addicted to anything. Give. Don't take short cuts. Love things without owning them, love nature. Speak with integrity. Manage time and your computer desktop. Benefits of less TV. (Basically, he reveals the right direction with innovative ideas to try immediately.)

He finishes the book off inviting you on this wonderful journey of less encumbrance with superfluous things...more time with people who matter. Gives you a lovely family, Christmas portrait on the last page.

IN SUMMARY:

I enjoy how Joshua doesn't push his religious beliefs. I am a Christian, but I still don't like to be preached to. I did enjoy all the great quotes throughout, especially the one by Spurgeon. My dad loves Charles Spurgeon!

If you can't tell, I thoroughly loved this book. I have read a great deal of books on minimalism, but nobody sums it up and packages this kind of life like Joshua does here. Definitely worth having in your Kindle library. I have reaped plenty from having less: mobility, time (to enjoy life), more savings, focus --> a satisfying career, stronger relationships, a greener lifestyle... The list goes on, and it will for you, too.

Great blogger produces great book!

I've been reading through becomingminimalist.com for months now and I've gone through all the archives. Joshua Becker is a talented writer who is also a real human being living in the real world. He doesn't make the reader feel guilty or shamed for their stuff, he just tells you how he escaped from the cycle of buying, cleaning, storing, fixing and moving the same types of clutter most of us struggle with. Becker won't tell you to own only what fits in a back pack, unless that's what you really WANT to do. Becker tells you how to be a minimalist while at the same time not making your family worry that you're giving everything away and contemplating running off to join a monastery.

Also, this is my very first ebook purchase and it's pretty great - reading on my Android.

About the Author

ROBERT S. JORDAN is Research Professor of Political Science at the University of New Orleans and past Vice President of the International Studies Association. He is the author or editor of over twenty scholarly books.

CLIVE ARCHER is Professor of Political Science at Manchester Metropolitan University. He is the author of several books on International Organization and the European Union, and is Chair of the University for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) He is an active member of the British International Studies Association and the Royal Institute of International Affairs.

GREGORY GRANGER is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. He held the 1999-2000 Clyde Bostick Professorship of Social Sciences and is currently Vice President of the Louisiana Political Science Association.

KERRY ORDES is Temporary Visiting Instructor of Political Science at Louisiana State University in Shreveport.

Slavoj Žižek is a Slovenian philosopher and cultural critic. About the Author
Graeme Macrae Burnet is one of Scotland's brightest literary talents. Born and brought up in Kilmarnock, he spent some years working as an English teacher in Prague, Bordeaux, Porto and London, before returning to Glasgow and working for eight years for various independent television companies. He has degrees in English Literature and International Security Studies from Glasgow and St Andrews universities respectively. His first novel, The Disappearance of Adele Bedeau (Contraband, 2014), received a New Writer's Award from the Scottish Book Trust, was longlisted for the Waverton Good Read Award and was a minor cult hit. Set in small-town France, it is a compelling psychological portrayal of a peculiar outsider pushed to the limit by his own feverish imagination. His second novel, His Bloody Project, has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2016. He is currently working on another novel featuring Georges Gorski, the haunted detective in The Disappearance of Adele Bedeau.

A fascinating read

4.5 stars. I first became aware of this book when the Man Booker long list was announced. I would like to try to read as many of them as possible and started with this one. For the first two thirds of the book, I wasn't quite sure why it was nominated for such a prestigious award. It was thoroughly enjoyable and I would have highly recommended it for that reason alone. It also provided an interesting twist on the crime novel in that it is written entirely in document form - police interviews with the villagers who knew the murder victims and the accused, medical examiner reports, a memoir purportedly written by the accused, an account by a preeminent criminal psychologist who interviewed the accused, his father and villagers and, finally, a report of the trial. The author also managed to write all of these various documents in voices that were true to the period. There were also interesting insights into classism, family dynamics, and the dynamics between residents in a small village.

Then the last third of the book happened and I was blown away. Those bits of the story that had niggled at your brain from earlier on that weren't properly addressed came into play. One is left with questions regarding the justice system, the death penalty and criminal insanity - particularly, in this instance, the diagnosis of it and what it would mean for the individual (either hanging or a life, likely spent in an asylum). Class issues are raised in this section as well. It was here that I really saw what the Man Booker judges did as well as gained a better appreciation of the earlier parts of this book. This doesn't mean that I feel it should necessarily win the prize (I won't make any such determination yet), but I can see why it was nominated.

This review may seem spoilerish, but I was careful to make sure that it isn't. I haven't included any information that one can't glean from the blurb, the table of contents or the first few pages. Now, stop reading this review and go read this book!

True Crime (or not) in Scottish Fiction

In the spring of 2014, I embarked on a project to find out a
little about my grandfather, Donald 'Tramp' Macrae, who was
born in 1890 in Applecross, two or three miles north of Culduie.
It was in the course of my research at the Highland Archive
Centre in Inverness that I came across some newspaper clippings
describing the trial of Roderick Macrae, and with the assistance
of Anne O'Hanlon, the archivist there, discovered the manuscript
which comprises the largest part of this volume.

Immediately upon finishing this latest Man Booker nominee, I turned back to the author's introduction to check whether I had been reading genuine documents about a true case, or the imaginative products of a clever author with an uncanny sense of style. I think the latter, but even now I cannot be quite sure. The larger part of this book is, as Macrae Burnet tells us, the memoir written in 1869 by 17-year-old Roderick John Macrae at the request of his solicitor while he is awaiting trial in Inverness Castle. He freely admits to killing Lachlan Mackenzie (commonly known as Lachlan Broad) and two other people in the former's house in Culduie, Wester Ross, in order to relieve his father of the persecution he was suffering at Mackenzie's hands. From beginning to end of the book, there is no dispute about these facts; all that remains to be filled in are the details, motivation, and the question of moral guilt.

Roddy Macrae's memoir takes up the first half of the book. It is preceded by various written statements made at the time by neighbors, the local schoolteacher, and the Presbyterian minister, which show a wide variety of opinions, revealing the character of each writer quite as much as that of their subject. It is an extraordinarily compact way of depicting the small crofting community, the various rivalries within it, and the constricting power of the Kirk. The latter part of the book consists of reports of the trial and its aftermath. Burnet is pitch-perfect in capturing the tone of depositions, official documents, and newspaper reports, but nothing is astounding as Roddy's narrative itself, which not only nails the style of 19th-century Scots prose* (think Stevenson) but also recreates the social and moral world in which the tragedy plays itself out.

Culduie is a real place, on the west coast of Scotland a little bit north of the Isle of Skye. Beautiful though it seems to tourist eyes, in the 19th-century it must have been a place of feudal squalor. Here and elsewhere, huge swaths of coast and mountain would be owned by a Laird, and used largely for the purpose of hunting and fishing. The lands would be managed by a Factor, who would assign local jurisdiction to a Constable elected from each area. The crofters lived in little more than hovels, occupying their houses and farming their land at the pleasure of the Laird, and subject to arbitrary rulings on the part of the Constable. Reading this portion of the book made me very angry indeed, not only at the grossly unfair exercise of class privilege, but at the bovine acceptance of it by most of the local people. Here is a snatch of conversation overheard by Roddy at the annual Highland Gathering:

I fell in behind two well-dressed gentlemen and eavesdropped on
their conversation. The first declared in a loud voice, 'It is
easy to forget that such primitives still exist in our country.'
His companion nodded solemnly and wondered aloud whether more
might be done for us. The first gentleman then expressed the
view that it was difficult to assist people who were so incapable
of doing anything for themselves. They then paused to drink from
a flask and watch a knot of girls pass by.

This attitude is echoed by that of the Presbyterian Minister, Mr. Galbraith, who speaks of "a savagism" that the Church has only been partially successful in suppressing. He has no difficulty in asserting that Roddy is a throwback to the primitive type, a noxious individual, enslaved to the Devil. Burnet may have used Galbraith as a scathing example of religion at its worst and least compassionate (he based him, apparently, on a real figure), but there is another aspect to his Presbyterianism that is not much developed in the novel, but which I see as centrally important. The willingness of Roddy's father and his sister Jetta to submit to Lachlan Broad's tyranny is the Calvinist doctrine of Predestination in its crudest form:

You must not say such things, Roddy. If you understood more about
the world, your would see that Lachlan Broad is not responsible.
It is providence that has brought us to this point. It is no more
Lachlan Broad's doing than yours or mine or Father's.

Jetta, who has second sight, tells him that she has foreseen Lachlan's death. The combination of Gaelic superstition and Presbyterian fatalism finally propels Roddy to his act. So we see two theories of his crime: class and religion. The trial, however, will focus on the question of mental confidence. But here we discover something else: that Roddy is not the trustworthy narrator we had thought.** All along, we have been proceeding towards understanding and even sympathy—but then something happens to kick us in the gut. From this horrendous point on, halfway through the book, neither Roddy nor the author is any more to be trusted. The novel becomes a genuine cliffhanger, even as it sinks deeper into tragedy. It is really a superb achievement.

Also as in Stevenson, the text is scattered with dialect Scots words—including the two murder weapons, a croman and a flaughter. Oddly enough, Burnet places his glossary halfway through the book (54% in my Kindle edition). Sassenach readers would be well advised to bookmark it!

In terms of the combination of unreliable narrator with a 19th-century Scottish crime drama, I thought of the novels of Jane Harris, GILLESPIE AND I and THE OBSERVATIONS. Reviews have also compared HIS BLOODY PROJECT to books such as Margaret Atwood's ALIAS GRACE and James Robertson's TESTAMENT OF GIDEON MACK. I am sure many other comparisons are possible. But that does not lessen the stunning originality of the book we have.

Superbly written look into a murder

The case of Roderick Macrae is given a thorough review in this novel. The writer has wonderfully captured the historical nature of the times. Through this lens, the story lays out a murder case in such away to give the reader an interesting read. The state of Roderick's mind at the time is the real mystery here and one that is never 100% satisfyingly answered. Well worth the read.

A Most Appropriate Bio for the Prophet of the Digital Age

Marshall McLuhan, somewhere, is getting quite a chuckle out of Douglas Coupland's biography of the prophet of the digital age, if only because Coupland's imaginative recounting has refashioned the typographical media of the book (a keystone subject of McLuhan's work) to reflect the impact of the digital media on its aging ancester.

The result is a format that is far more engaging and immensely more informative than the voluminous biographies that dominate the genre today. The biography, more than anything else, clearly demonstrates what McLuhan meant when he wrote: "The medium is the message," in Understanding Media, his study of electronic media as it swallowed print. In that study, McLuhan pointed out that media would be forced to adapt to emerging media, or face annihilation. As an example, he pointed to two print products launched during the golden age of TV, a time when the p.m. newspaper was being wiped off the face of the planet by the disruptive electronic media. Life magazine and MAD magazine thrived because their formats reflected the influence of television's picture oriented format. Life's photos, and MAD's woodcut-like illustrations benefited from complementing the new media's format.

And, so it is with Coupland's biography of McLuhan, who prophesized the Internet 50 years ago, give or take.

The book's format of short chapters, similar to blocks of type on the Internet, direct writing typified by short declarative sentences, conversational style, with sections and chapters broken up by pages lifted from the www network, and quotes from McLuhan, demonstrate how books will change as a result of the Internet's dominance.

It's for better or worse, depending upon the eye of the beholder.

Coupland, like McLuhan, recognizes the fact of how the new media is changing the means of expression that preceded it. Nothing personal. Just how it is.

And so it was for McLuhan, who largely detested the electronic media, even as he described its fundamental effects on the sensory landscape in crystal clarity. McLuhan was most comfortable and preferred old school media. As in auditory, before even the written word became coin of the realm. But the curmudgeonly prophet was never foolish enough to suggest attempting to turn back the expansion of new media. Nor did McLuhan offer "answers." For those with open minds, he shed light on developments that still puzzle, scare, and dismay those who don't "get it."

My initial reaction to Coupland's format was: this is cute. But Coupland's book aptly introduces us to McLuhan the man, who comes alive in this hybrid. The eccentric and mad punster with two arteries feeding his weirdly wired brain, while the vast majority of us mortals have one becomes a real being, beyond authoring pithy rules to live by in the digital age. But other factors in shaping McLuhan's pioneering observation also are recognized, ranging from his gene pool to his environment, and other influences such as the Canadian author/philosopher who introduced McLuhan to the notions that the media are extension of our senses.

No. This is not a cute book. It is a fine, informative, and highly entertaining description of a giant's life, in a spare 209 pages. I have often wondered while slogging through ponderous biographies whether a concise biography could describe the subject as well. Coupland answers in the affirmative.

That's not to say I don't want to know more about McLuhan, or that I didn't just pull Understanding Media off the shelf while writing this review to double check a few things. I will continue to consult McLuhan's thinking as long as my mind works and I can get vertical in the a.m.

For those new to McLuhan, it's hard to imagine a better introduction. But even for those who have been touched by McLuhan's observations and thoughts, this is a wonderfully entertaining and informative read.

McLuhan Revisited

I just got done reading this book. Only then it was called simply "Marshall McLuhan", and appeared in a series called "Extraordinary Canadians" Extraordinary Canadians Marshall Mcluhan. It was a bio that said more about Doug Coupland than about MM, which is to say, only DC could write it. Also only DC could re-cast, -version, -vive, and re-release it, or perhaps it was his publisher, editor, agent, or manager who got the brilliant idea to rename the book after McLuhan's line in Woody Allen's "Annie Hall" (in which the late MM played himself).

After all, that's probably what most people know MM from. Or perhaps the unforgettable phrase, "The medium is the message". If anyone remembers any books, they are likely the photoessays by Jerome Agel and Quentin Fiore, "The Medium is the Massage" The Medium is the Massage: An Inventory of Effects and "War and Peace in the Global Village" War and Peace in the Global Village, which are long on photos and short on essays, and which MM had almost nothing to do with. They are sort of "greatest hits" collections of witty aphorisms, epithets, jokes, puns, and one-liners. In this MM excelled (witness the titles). Doug Coupland says that's the way his brain was wired. There was also "The Book of Probes" The Book of Probes from David Carson, author of "The End of Print". Instead of a pocket paperback with pithy cut lines over black and white photos, it was a giant hardback of pithy cut lines over Carson's color graphics and calligraphy.

McLuhan's first essay was on Chesterton, (reprinted in The Medium and the Light The Medium and the Light: Reflections on Religion), and GKC also excelled at very short verbal thrust and parry--from a line to a paragraph. Some dogged critics have mastered the entire books of The Gutenberg Galaxy or Understanding Media, but for everyone else, it doesn't click. There is no understanding Marshall McLuhan, because he didn't want to be understood. But read a random line now from one of the aforementioned sources, or the quotes and quips scattered throughout this book, and MM seems positively prescient.

Reviewers of Coupland's bio suggest that unlike everyone else, he "gets" it: he understands MM. But he got it long ago. Gen X and the rest of his books flow from a psyche soaked in MM. One idea MM got from art is about the figure and ground (what the rest of us call background). He said ignore the figure; watch the ground. That's where the change is happening. In Doug's "Shampoo Planet" Shampoo Planet there is something like a periodic chart of Gen X (or something like that) that forms the ground for the book. The figures are somewhat cursory sketches, but groundswells run through the book, v. much as in "The Catcher in the Rye", and Planet is written in the same sort of reminiscent stream-of-consciousness style. The example I think of is a cartoon. Different artists do Fred Flintstone and the stone-age background. The studio hopes that viewers stay riveted on Fred's antics, and don't notice that he keeps running past the same tree. Chuck Jones made good use of incongruent, clashing backgrounds in the 1953 Daffy Duck cartoon, "Duck Amuck".

I think of the line in a Dylan song: "You know something's happening here but you don't know what it is, do you Mr. Jones?" Marshall didn't know what was happening either, simply that something was, and set out to explore it. He started with the inherited academic vocabulary: media were extensions of man. What? There was something called manuscript culture before the printing press, and it changed things. Then the printing press, which people noticed, also did, in some indefinable way. Then radio. But by the time you got to TV, things were changing with electric speed. "By electricity we have not been driven out of our senses so much as our senses have been driven out of us. Today man's nerves surround us; they have gone outside as electrical environment." Hmmmm. What's that sound like?

That said, this book did help me "get" McLuhan. Doug basically says that MM was one of a kind, and shows why he could introduce the rest of us fish to the water. Doug oft refers to the essay by Tom Wolfe, "What If He is Right?" from 1965, and which was reprinted in McLuhan: Hot and Cool (1967 McLuhan Hot and Cool: A Primer for the Understanding of McLuhan, a book I found very decent and enlightening, and which also enabled me to say I know something of his work.

Best bio, best subject, aye?

Douglas Coupland mixes insight about the present as seen from the past, insight about the past as seen from the present and has almost nothing to say about the future. He thinks his guess is a good as yours or mine. Who among us is smart enough and secure enough to say that?
The stuff about Marshall MacLuhan's neurology, his cultural, familial, geographic and historical background is the type of insight biographers struggle to achieve at many times the length of this precise book.
The idea that MacLuhan has been forgotten and dismissed because his work was about thinking - not the monetization and cubby-holing of thought - is Coupland's key analysis, though every page offers food for thought.
"You Know Nothing of My Work" is an inviting entryway to the imaginativeness that doomed the 60s and the thoughts of one of the Western World's greatest minds to forever stay in the 60s, while the rest of us re-invent the wheel and marvel at its shape and utility.
