Lash develops the theme of reflexive modernization in relation the aesthetics and the interpretation of culture. In this domain, he suggests, we need to look again at the conventional theories of postmodernism; "aesthetic modernization" has distinctive qualities that need to be uncovered and analyzed.

In the concluding sections of the book, the three authors offer critical appraisals of each other's viewpoints, providing a synthetic conclusion to the work as a whole.

That backbeat that'll get ya' if ya' don't watch out

Lash invokes an opposition to modernization as a covering theory for witch burning, the attempted extermination of Crow, Cree, Ojibwa, etc. the attempted extermination of Jews and goodness knows what else. At first blush, the idea stimulates the kind of intellectual satisfaction that's supposed to be associated with a covering theory.
Then a possible hazard suggests itself...Modernism, -ization, (moderning, anyone?) is so very vague a term that the designation "opposition to modernism" could seem to apply to, well, darn near anything.
When the intent-to-critique is half-discounted to the intent-to-justify (as seems half-inevitable,) it turns out that what emerges is something like the jingoistic jingle "It's a-ok to slay anyone (or thing) that's in the way." In comparison mere Hitlerism seems positively thoughtful.
Is that where the reflexive part is supposed to come in?

About the Author
Linda Peterson (Ph.D., Brown University) was Professor of English at Yale University and was published widely on nonfiction prose, notably life-writing and women's authorship. She co-directed the Bass Writing Program at Yale for twenty-five years and served as president of the Council of Writing Program Administrators.

John Brereton (Ph.D., Rutgers University) is a Professor of English, Emeritus, at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Previously he served as Executive Director of the Calderwood Writing Initiative at the Boston Athenæum. He has taught writing at Harvard University, Wayne State University, Brandeis University, and the City University of New York. His scholarship focuses on the history of teaching English literature and composition.

Joseph Bizup (Ph.D., Indiana University) is an Associate Professor of English and Director of the College of Arts & Sciences Writing Program at Boston University. He previously taught and directed writing programs at Yale University and Columbia University in the City of New York. His scholarly interests include nineteenth-century literature, especially nonfiction prose, and writing studies, especially genre, style, and argumentation.

Anne Fernald (Ph.D., Yale University) is Professor of English and Women's Studies at Fordham University, where she directs the first-year writing program at the Lincoln Center campus. She is the author of Virginia Woolf: Feminism and the Reader (Palgrave, 2006) and editor of the Cambridge University Press edition of Mrs. Dalloway (2014). Her scholarship focuses on modernist women writers, feminist theory, and the essay.

Melissa A. Goldthwaite (Ph.D., The Ohio State University), General Editor, is Professor of English at Saint Joseph’s University, where she teaches composition, creative writing, and rhetorical theory. Her books include Books That Cook: The Making of a Literary Meal (New York University Press, 2014), The Norton Pocketbook of Writing by Students (2010), Surveying the Literary Landscapes of Terry Tempest Williams (University of Utah Press, 2003), and The St. Martin’s Guide to Teaching Writing (Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2003, 2008, 2014).

This book is creatively useful in helping you improve your English literacy and it affects your way of thinking as well.

I've used this book for an English 101 class and I have to say that these essays, stories, narratives from various authors helped me improve my English literacy and it also supported my brainstorming when conjuring up ideas to write in my essays. I was surprised at how much my attention delved in these stories, they helped me gain fundamental understandings of some dilemmas, backgrounds, and controversy that isn't effectively surfaced in our society today. Overall, this book a nice companion to have to help expand your mind.

Excellent variety, presents an assortment of reading topics from notable and famous writers. Perfect for a quick reading and variaty. Although I read this book in a course, I wish there would have been a kindle version for future reading. A majority of the essays and stories are worthy of re-reading several times over.

I continually find gems in this anthology that make it well worth reading. If you haven't found Robert Louis Stevenson's piece yet, go read it! It's twisted, but it's brilliant.

Even if you don't need this for a class, GET IT. If you DO need it for a class, get it and KEEP IT. Read it for fun; I do, and I love it. You'll not regret it.

Be it as a person's counselor or as a founding member of facilities for the homeless, Kevin Everett FitzMaurice, M.S., NCC, CCMHC, LPC, seeks to make others' lives better by helping others improve how they function. As a volunteer, he supports community services to improve others' living conditions. As a counselor, he "counsels" in the traditional sense: advising, directing, and nudging--or pushing--others into facing and resolving their issues.

Mr. FitzMaurice has a variety of formal and advanced training in counseling, which includes Addictions Counseling, Family Therapy, advanced Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Transactional Analysis (TA), and over 1300 hours of diverse training for continuing education units (CEUs). To make the best use of that extensive training, he takes an integrative approach, grounding himself in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and using the other theories to build upon that one core theory, rather than focusing on multiple theories and mastering none of them.

After more than twenty years in counseling, Mr. FitzMaurice has worked four years in the substance abuse field, directed two community mental health programs, and spent fourteen years counseling in private practice. In that time, he has refined many principles for and methods of counseling. He now puts those principles and methods into book form to share them with a wider audience, so more people can benefit than he can reach in person. Currently, he has more than twenty books written, most of which are available worldwide as e-books from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Sony, Google, Kobo, and Apple.

Who am I? This is one of the greatest philosophical questions and this book has a well reasoned answer.

Are you Ego or are you Self? This book will help you cope with the world by radically altering your perspective on your own identity. Tackling one of the great pillars of philosophical thought, "Who am I?" this book provides a safe, secure, and peaceful answer. After reading this book cover to cover, you will be hard pressed to imagine a better way to think about yourself. I hope you find it as beneficial to your personal life as I have.

A wake up call

I have never read something similar in the past.It is definitely a "must have" for me.It introduced me to the notion of self talk and made me realized i was submited to it's rule all my life!
