Expand your repertoire

I'm an intermediate finger picker and I bought this book to learn a few more songs. There are 15 arangemets ranging from country, piedmont, Texas, delta and slide in standard and open tunings.It contains some easy songs that I could play almost immediately and some more challenging ones that I'm still working on. The CD was very helpful as it has each song played twice: once full speed with sung lyrics and once slowed down so you can work out what's happening.

If your thumb can already do its own thing without you having to tell it, then this book is a bargain at only 10 bucks. If your thumb is still connected to your brain, then buy beginning fingerstyle blues by Arnie Bearle and Mark Galbo first.

The funnest material to play at this level

The one negative review is what prompted me to write about this book. And it's not that I disagree with what it said, it's just that this is what the book is and I like it.

He is correct that it's beginners stuff, and songs "in the style" of the blues masters. That's true, but that suits me just fine. I had worked through Arnie Berle's "Beginning Fingerstyle Blues Guitar Book" and used this book to find some songs to apply that to, and to learn a few things. It really fit the bill, these songs were really fun to play.

As S.Newman said, this book contains tabs for a range of musical styles - mostly in the country blues vein - at a range of difficulties. I'm a (very) rank beginner, and there's a couple of pieces at even my level. There's no real scale of difficulty for the pieces, so you have to check 'em out yourself. There are suggestions of techniques, but this isn't really a "teaching book" per se. As stated, the CD is a useful adjunct.

One feature I truly appreciate is the biographical and musicological information Mr. James includes with each song, along with suggested recordings. I frequently find myself reading these snippets even when the song is beyond my current skills.

Good, but not great.

This book came to me highly recommended by two professors. The book is well organized and covers everything about urban sustainability. It is a great read if you have not read this sort of thing before, because it will quickly open your eyes to facets of life that may have so far escaped your consideration. However, I am disappointed with the substantiated data provided in the book. There are a few case study-type sections that are largely based in and around Ottawa, but many of the supporting information the author is using is coming from mediocre sources that are not the peer-reviewed journals for which I was hoping. The author makes significant claims and statements that differ from other sources I have read, and the citations are along the lines of Popular Science and E Magazine. I think I could get away citing Michael Hough, but I'm not sure my professors would accept many of the citations he uses. It's a good book, just not the great book I was hoping to find.

I have enjoyed this book. If you love to read about the unseen worlds and the beings and forces that drive it then this book will educate you further. There are exercises to do which assist you in tapping into this topic to understand it all a bit better. I am glad to have it and will not be selling it any time soon.
I run workshops, write books and do readings and love books like these as they provide wonderful reference material.

I already loved this author. This book is so informative, and amazing!
If you have ever wondered where some of the sayings came from, and what they actually mean, this book
answered a great deal of that for me.
Plus, it is a wealth of info. about the ancient ones, and how to work with them.
I would also recommend Wicca the Complete Craft by D.J. Conway. The historical data, along with
secrets being revealed for the present time is wonderful!!!!!!! Chery.

Dr. Bradley has been the Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego since 1988, and is currently Professor and Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Pediatrics, University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He has served on the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Infectious Diseases (Red Book Committee) 2004-2010, and the Council of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS) Council, 2007-2011 where he promoted the development of a PIDS Antimicrobial Stewardship program.

Emeritus
Dr. Nelson is Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Children's Medical Center, the same institution since he started his career back in 1957. At UT Southwestern he established the first formal Pediatric Infectious Disease fellowship program with Dr. Kenneth Haltalin and later Dr. George McCracken. He also went on to establish the National Pediatric Infectious Disease Seminar with Dr. McCracken and in 1982 they founded the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal for which they continue as Chief Editors. In 1975 Dr. Nelson produced the first edition of the Pocket Book of Pediatric Antimicrobial Therapy which has gone through 20 biennial editions and is now edited by Dr. John Bradley.

Anthony Walsh is a professor of criminal justice at Boise State University. He has had field experience in both law enforcement and corrections. He currently teaches criminology, statistics and law, and his major research interest is biosocial criminology. He has published 20 books and over 100 articles, mostly on biosocial topics.
