About the Author

Laura Gurak�is Professor and Chair of the Department of Writing Studies at the University of Minnesota, where she teaches courses in technical and professional communication, digital literacies, and communication research. She received an M.S. in Technical Communication and Ph.D. in Communication and Rhetoric from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is a recipient of the Society for Technical Communication’s Outstanding Article award. Prior to graduate school, Gurak worked as a technical writer for a number of companies; she continues to collaborate with workplace professionals through her department’s Industrial Affiliates Program. In addition to four textbooks, Gurak is author of two books from Yale University Press, co-editor of three edited collections, and author of many articles and commentaries.

John Lannon�is Professor Emeritus and former Director of Writing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he developed the undergraduate major in professional writing and co-developed the M.A. program in professional writing. He holds a B.S., M.A. & Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and received an NDEA Fellowship and a Fulbright Lectureship. He worked four years in biomedical science and technology with the U.S. Air Force, and an additional three years in medical laboratories. In addition to five textbooks in business communication, rhetoric, and technical communication, he is author or coauthor of book reviews, environmental publications, scripted training, and instructional software. He has served as a communications and training consultant in business, government, and education.

Really cute! My nieces love it but be warned! THIS IS THE BONUS EPISODE ON "A VERY MINTY CHRISTMAS DVD." I thought I was getting them a new movie but they already had it on the Christmas DVD. They really like the book!

This review article covered developments in the field from 1966 through 1976. A few minor typographical errors in the original edition have been corrected in this new edition. A new table of critical points for the studentized maximum modulus is included in this second edition as an addendum. The original edition included the table by K. C. S. Pillai and K. V. Ramachandran, which was meager but the best available at the time. This edition contains the table published in Biometrika in 1971 by G. 1. Hahn and R. W. Hendrickson, which is far more comprehensive and therefore more useful. The typing was ably handled by Wanda Edminster for the review article and Karola Decleve for the changes for the second edition. My wife, Barbara, again cheerfully assisted in the proofreading. Fred Leone kindly granted permission from the American Statistical Association to reproduce my review article. great book in simultaneous inference

Rupert Miller was a great teacher, writer and research. He was very well known and appreciated for his work as editor of the Annals of Statistics, for his work on the jackknife and for his teaching. I took the graduate course in applied statistics from him at Stanford and in a department of many great statistician and teachers he stood out as the best teacher. He has also published "Biostatistics Casebook" , "Survival Analysis", "Beyond ANOVA" and two editions of this book. He died many years ago from cancer and is sorely missed.

As with his other books in this book he takes a difficult topic and explains it very clearly. I recommend all his books and refer to this one when considering multiple comparison procedures. It unfortunately does not include any of the research past the early 1980s. So for the latter developments I would recommend the book by Westfall and Young and the text by Jason Hsu.

Great introduction to a topic that continues to gain importance in biostatistics

As with every book he wrote, the late Professor Miller gives a thorough and scholarly treatment to a difficult topic. This 1981 edition is the second edition of this book originally published by a different publisher in 1966. Both editions have been heavily cited in the statistical literature. This gives you everything you every wanted to know about simultaneous confidence intervals and hypotheses test but were afraid to ask. It is a great reference book.

As the 21 century began the uses of simultaneous inference in biostatistics and particularly clinical trials has grown. One should now also consult Jason Hsu's book Multiple Comparisons. The p-value adjustemnt approach is givenin the resampling book by Westfall and Young. New ideas when the number of hypotheses tests becomes very large is the concept of a false discovery rate.

Miller's book is outdated in some respects but the classical techniques of Tukey, Dunnett and Scheffe are still in use and I would definitely recommend this book as a first reference for someone needing a basic clear introduction to the topic.

What I expected and more. Recommend it regardless of field.

While stressing out a year too early for my med school interviews I came across Dr. K on Twitter and decided to give the book a read. I first saw the free preview and for the price I thought I had nothing to lose by buying it. It definitely met my expectations and surpassed them. As the book states it is not a Q&A type of list but just the questions and you come up with the rest. It helped me contemplate and think about all sorts of questions I had never even considered.

I can say that while reading it I became increasingly more confident that I will not be caught by surprise in an interview and I will have time to think out possible answers so I can organize my thoughts and not blubber on the spot. I honestly recommend it for anyone regardless of field of study, anyone that has to go through an interview in their life (and who doesn't) should at least give a quick read.

Just a List of Questions - But Nothing More

I first encountered Dr. K on twitter. I thought his first book "Everything I Learned in Medical School" was a very good read. I was able to read it in about 2-3 hours. It was full of that cheeky jaded med student humor, but at the end of the day you never doubted for a second that Dr. K loved medicine. It reminded me that I would not doubt my future career choice despite the sacrifices I would have to make in other parts of my life.

Why Medicine is a completely different book. Aside from the first 11 paragraphs that make up the first 3 chapters, the book is a list of 500 questions. Most of the 500 questions don't include any further explanation or insight on how to answer them (obviously we're suppose to think about them and answer them ourselves). I'd say maybe 10% of the questions in the book get a paragraph long explanation on how one should answer such a question. Unfortunately you can't really sit down and read this book because it is essentially a list of 500 questions. On my way to work I read through approximately 25% of the book (the bus ride that day took about 10 minutes). Since the book, to me, doesn't seem like it's meant to be read in the traditional sense, I don't know how one should use it? I certainly wouldn't whip it out in an admissions office waiting for my interview.

In Summary, I was disappointed by this book. I ended up zoning out as I glossed over an endless list of questions. A few made me stop and think and wonder how I would answer them. But at the end of the day I didn't feel like I finished this book knowing more or feeling more confident about my looming med school interviews. Since this is an ebook, I look forward to and hope Dr. K will make substantial edits.

For $2.99, this book is a gem. Its very handy and has just about every question a program director can throw at you. Its definitely made me more confident about my upcoming interviews. Give it a read, you'll be glad you did.
