About the Author
L. Dodge Fernald is Senior Lecturer on Psychology in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling/ Clinical Psychology from Cornell University and has served as a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Madrid and as a Visiting Professor at Cornell University. He was the Assistant Dean of the Masters of Liberal Arts Program at the Harvard Extension School until summer 2001. His basic textbook, Introduction to Psychology, that went through several editions with Houghton Mifflin and Prentice Hall and he has written other books for Erlbaum (The Hans Legacy: A Story of Science) and Macmillan (Walking Tour of Walden Two, with a Foreword by B. F. Skinner). He has received the Petra T. Shattuck Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Harvard Extension School, and he is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association Division Two - Society for the Teaching of Psychology. His areas of interest include psychological measurement, clinical practice, and the educational implications of psychology.

great book

Bought this book for my undergrad capstone class and it was very informative of the different perspectives in psychology. Each chapter goes in depth on the particular perspective and comes with a summary and important key words at the end of the chapter. Also, there are a couple questions that you should be able to answer at the end of the chapter. Overall, really great textbook and sums up the perspectives perfectly.

Overall I think it's a pretty decent textbook content wise. It could be organized a bit better. One shouldn't have to turn back 5 pages to review referenced illustrations and tables. Also the Excel appendicies steps should be revisited. I had to use YouTube for thorough step by step instructions. This was an overall issue with my classmates as well and I pointed them to the Youtube site and they found the instructions there much easier to follow for the assigned tasks.

Best Practices Book on Accounts Payable - Recommended

Essentials of Accounts Payable is a great resource. I'm a practicing CPA and I found it useful.

Accounts payable is normally the first place a new accountant/bookkeeper is going to get a start within an accounting department. And this is in many ways an organization's first line of defense, so it's important to have the function well-covered. Essentials of Accounts Payable is filled with best practice information and advice that will prove insightful and useful to anybody dealing with this function.

This book is not meant to be a complete preparation for the job of accounts payable. One still must learn "debits and credits" - basic accounting. Also, every organization has its own mix of circumstances and history and is therefore unique. What is a desirable practice in one organization may not be in another as the book makes clear. By gaining information, insights and advice on the subject, one is better prepared to properly revise their own accounting policies and procedures.

Since accounting policies and procedures are not static, it pays to revisit ideas about accounts payable. This is a great book for that purpose.

Mr. Phillips has given Fujifilm X-System photographers a GIFT with his "The Complete Guide to Fujifilm's X-Pro2"! It is simply the most comprehensive, complete, and thoroughly enjoyable book on the superb X-Pro2 that I have seen, and I'm quite certain that I shall learn not only features and functionality, but the "Why" one applies a certain setting or function! For example, in the Image Quality Settings section, he devotes several pages just on the differences between sRGB and aRGB, and why you should use one over the other! No mere "manual" ever goes into that depth! Detail like this abounds throughout the book. And as a bonus, Tony gives you a link to a free pdf called "Mastering Flash with the Fujifilm X Cameras"! The sheer detail and breadth of information contained in this book is amazing, and I think it belongs in every X-Pro2 user's library! Simply one of the best photography books I've ever read in my 35 years' photographic experience!

About the Author
A member of the Federation of Australian Astrologers since the early 1980s and serving on the committee as Victorian Treasurer for seven years, Michele is also a member of the Association of Professional Astrologers. Michele works as an astrologer and stress management therapist in Melbourne where she uses astrology, hypnotherapy and other tools to facilitate healing. She also conducts meditation classes. Her main astrological passions are mundane astrology, psychological astrology and healing. Her first book, Secrets of the Zodiac was published March 2009.

An enduring contribution

Michele Finey has has stepped up to the plate and delivered a solid and enduring contribution to the field of Astrology. In the tradition of such astrological greats as Alexander Ruperti and Robert Blaschke, she examines the cyclical interaction of Venus and Mars on both a personal and collective level. This is a very fine book which any serious student of cycles should have on their shelf.

Very few astrologers understand cycles well enough to delineate the planetary phases in a book, but here Finey courageously offers her own interesting and informative take on the various relationships between Venus and Mars with the Sun. Personally I love her use of the universal Hero's Journey for Mars, having written an essay and a software package using the same metaphor for the planetary phases myself. It's a solid metaphor that works quite well, which she illustrates with examples from historical figures. Her Venus phases are unique, and reminiscent of Demetra George's Goddess work, with various Goddesses embodying each of the phases. Again these are clearly elucidated and illustrated with examples. And finally her investigation of the various relationships of Venus and Mars is the best I have seen since Jeffrey Wolf Green did a chapter on them in his second Pluto book.

But wait, I've saved the best for last. One of the real gems in this book are the illustrations, which are first rate. The investigations into sacred geometry and alchemy/metallurgy are very interesting, scholarly and rigorous. The most fantastic contribution here is Finey's investigation into the long term cycle of Venus and Mars conjunctions, which she calls the Venus-Mars Saros cycle. Just like eclipses happen in groups or families that span thousands of years, Finey has discovered similar relationships between Venus-Mars conjunctions. This has ramifications not only in Mundane astrology, but also for personal horoscopes via the "degree of passion" or original point of commencement for the Venus-Mars cycle to which you belong. Finey deserves considerable applause for this last contribution alone. Well done!

It is a pleasure to write a review of this book, which is fine enough to rate as one of the most important astrological studies of recent years. That may sound an extravagant claim, but not enough astrologers engage with the great planetary cycles or investigate the larger ideas which inform the practice of astrology, much less seek to make them comprehensible to as wide an audience as possible.

In this thoroughly researched, well drafted and well presented text, Michele Finey has managed the balancing act required to write about often complex topics whilst keeping the information easy to understand and engaging. In the process she has produced both a book which all serious astrologers should be adding to their libraries, and a book which is accessible to people with little knowledge of astrological concepts and jargon who nevertheless want to understand better what Venus and Mars mean.

Venus and Mars are familiar, fundamental symbols to all astrologers, and both are vital factors to consider when assessing the astrology of human relationships, especially those relationships with any kind of erotic dimension. Some astrologers will be aware of the Venus-Earth cycle, which has been studied more than once, but the special point to this book is the way Michele has examined the long dance, over many centuries, between Venus and Mars, and how she has looked at this both as an influence on the individual horoscope and on much larger movements of consciousness and relationship on a collective level. Nobody has done this before - which is why this book is so important and so valuable. Groundbreaking texts like this are rare, and are to be treasured as a result.

But this book is much more than a high-minded text examining the long cycles of Venus and Mars. This is a wide ranging discussion of what Venus and Mars mean, fundamentally, as symbols, and how they work their magic. Michele includes a careful examination of them as morning and evening `stars', and helpful chapters discussing the `phases' they are in at the times people are born. You don't have to puzzle out what phase you were born under: There is a useful guide in the book's appendix. People are sure to find these chapters very illuminating, giving new insight into how the planet of love and pleasure - Venus - and the planet of action and assertion - Mars - work their influences on our hearts and minds and lives. Many chart examples of famous people are offered to illustrate and explain these factors.

There is something here for everyone, and richly nourishing food for thought for all serious astrologers who want to deepen their understanding of the dynamics of desire and action, enhancing their astrological craft and practice in the process. Michele presented some of the material offered here at the Federation of Australian Astrologers' international conference in Brisbane in 2010. I was in the audience at her talk, and was immediately excited by the work she was doing, its quality and significance. This book, the fruits of all her labors, has exceeded my hopes for it and I cannot recommend it too highly. `The Sacred Dance of Venus and Mars' is, quite simply, a must-have!

About the Author
Anna Freud is the youngest of Sigmund Freud's six children, and the only one to make her career in psychoanalysis, was born in Vienna on 3 December 1895. Starting her professional life as a schoolteacher, she became a member of the Vienna Psycho-Analytical Society in 1922. Her work in Vienna was brought to an end by the Nazi occupation and she found sanctuary in London with her parents in 1938. Her father died in the following year, but Anna Freud maintained the tradition he began in her work as a member of the British Psycho-Analytical Society and as the founder of the Hampstead Child Therapy Clinic - now the Anna Freud Centre. Her services to psychoanalysis were recognized by the award of the CBE in 1967 and by a large number of honorary doctorates on both sides of the Atlantic, including as a gesture of reparation, an honorary MD from the University of Vienna. She died on 9 October 1982.

A must for understanding defense mechanisms

Although this volume was originally published in 1966, the insights and knowledge it contains are invaluable. Not only is Anna Freud's insights important, she writes in a style the is understandable. Although culture has changed in many ways since she wrote, the defense mechanisms which people used have not. Her volume provides the tools for understanding and working through those mechanisms. Since there are so many mechanisms at work with anxieties, if you are seeking ways of overcoming anxiety and understanding its workings, then this volume is a must have for your library.

I often find myself reading and re-reading her volume. Each time I read through it, behaviors which have puzzled me become understandable.
