Tawfik A. Saleh is, at present, a faculty member in the Chemistry Department at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals. He has published several papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings, authored and edited several books and book chapters, and he is a member of several local and international scientific societies. He has supervised many graduate students. His expertise includes, but not limited to the synthesis, design and preparation of materials, nanomaterials, nanocomposites, hybrid materials and their applications. His expertise also includes materials characterization using various spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques.

The wall in question was torn down 300 years ago. In the intervening years, the narrow crosstown street in downtown Manhattan where the wall erected by Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant once stood has become the symbol of the New York financial market, and, writes Gordon, "the beating heart of world capitalism." In the prologue to this eloquent and engaging history, Gordon (Hamilton's Blessing) asserts that Wall Street's dominant position in the increasingly global economy makes it as worthy of the label "great power" as any sovereign state. The focus of his text, however, is to explain the twists and turns of fate that allowed New York to grow into the world's preeminent financial power, surpassing the once equally boisterous Philadelphia market in the U.S., and, at the turn of the last century, London in the global marketplace. Gordon weaves the history of the Street into a brisk and captivating narrative peopled with the fascinating characters who have played a part in its history. From Frederick Philipse, who successfully cornered the wampum market in 1666, to William C. In Gordon's words, Wall Street "has become the very beating heart of world capitalism." The history of Wall Street has been told over and over in bits and pieces. Countless books, such as John Brooks' Once in Golconda (1967) and Dana Thomas' The Plungers and the Peacocks (1969), have profiled the street's colorful cast of characters or significant periods. Gordon's own Scarlet Woman of Wall Street (1988) chronicled the exploits of Jay Gould, Jim Fisk, and Cornelius Vanderbilt in the Erie Railway "wars." Gordon regularly makes business history come alive in his column in American Heritage. Now he attempts a complete history of Wall Street even though Manhattan College finance professor Charles Geisst's Wall Street: A History (1997) is a commendable recent effort at the same thing. Gordon traces Wall Street's roots back a little farther than did Geisst, and his writing is more entertaining. He provides an abundance of fascinating anecdotes, but with so much material, it seems rambling at times. David Rouse

Wall Street: Good and Bad, Start to Finish

Very few books manage to write a 300 year history of anything and stay lively and thought provoking from start to finish. Mr. Gordon's "The Great Game" does so in convincing fashion.
The book maintains a quick pace, touching on all of the major events, firms and people that have led to Wall Street's emergence as financier for the world. Yet despite its quick pace the treatment of each of these characters and defining moments is surprisingly deep. I was surprised by the accolades that Mr. Gordon gave to Alexander Hamilton, and how much he had to do with helping establish the US, and correspondingly Wall Street, as a financial powerhouse. (So impressed I read one of his biographies by McDonald.) The theme of the book is the increasing potency of this small street, how it goes from being the financial focus of New York City to New York State, to the Northeast, to the US and finally to the entire world. Wall Street no long represents a few hundred feet of not even water front property, it has come to represent the very essence of finance, not just in the US, but throughout the world. Mr. Gordon has done an excellent job of walking the reader through this fascinating story.

Very Good Historical Read of Wall Street!!!

Very interesting. Financial schemes have plagued Wall St and the markets since their inception and not much has changed with the recent Refco, Enron, Tyco, World Com, LTCM scandals and the list goes on. The risk of playing the great game reaches beyond the instrument in which one invests but includes brokers, brokerage houses, banks & politicians. The history of Wall St finds itself another contributor to the old adage "The more things change, the more they remain the same."

Mortimer is a marvevlous guide

We all know why Elizabethan England fascinates us and Ian Mortimer is a wonderful guide. His sense of humor and level of detail bridges any gaps in understanding why Elizabethan England may not be a place we would want to live. Mortimer expects us to have pre-conceived notions and questions that develop as we read. We may, for instance, ascribe to the notion that Elizabethan England was a period of the flowering of art and language, and it was...to a point. By carefully going through all the contingencies of leadership, life, and labor, he shows us that it was difficult at best--the early, and not quite thought-out beginning of city living. Cleanliness and sanitation were two of the most off-putting descriptions Mortimer shares, but we also shrink at "medical care" and the somewhat arbitrary nature of punishment and death.

On the pro side, world-wide exploration was in its infancy, and it must have been thrilling to discover new products coming in from overseas, changing the way people thought about their own culture. People were reading--even women--and while much of what was available to them were religious tracts, there began to be something more as the period (1550-1600) wore on. Mortimer gives us statistics on how many books were being published and the results are startling.

My greatest interest in the period had been language: there are so many words no longer in use which seem to capture something unique in the lives of people at the time that I find them fascinating. Mortimer is likewise taken, for he spends some time explaining words, even words we use now for their meanings might well have changed since the sixteenth century. Just the list of tradesmen and merchants brings on a long period of daydreaming: tucker, tailor, baker, victualer, cutler, draper, cooper, currier, glover, hatter, hosier, cordwainer, costermonger, needlemaker, ostler, scrivener...the list goes on.

Mortimer tells us "you won't find the answers to [how to behave at table or how to tell the time] in traditional history books" so he attempts to address those gaps in our knowledge about everyday life. One of things I liked most about this non-traditional history was Mortimer directly addressing his readers: in the section on religion, he explains how Queen Elizabeth established a Protestant state and outlawed Catholicism. There was a long period of debate and discussion in the parliament before each infringement on the rights of Catholics to practice is enacted. The punishments for those found violating the strictures is profound and ugly, and Mortimer does not allow us to turn away. At the end of the chapter he exclaims in a one-sentence paragraph, "For the love of God."

Nearing the end of the book, Mortimer indulges us with a discussion of the theatre--who was writing, who was acting, who was watching. In other books (Imagine: How Creativity Works by Jonah Lehrer), it is suggested that Shakespeare reached the height of skill and brilliance that he did because he had competitors for the affections of theatre-goers. Mortimer tells of the other great playwrights of the time and their successes, pushing Shakespeare to craft the most daring and innovative scripts for the greatest stage actors. He suggests that part of the thrill of watching a Shakespearean drama was the mirror-like action that reflected the lives of watchers...something that was new and innovative. Passion plays, or morality plays common at the time had morphed into theatre that showed human endeavor and failings and did not just teach but explained.

No, perhaps I do not want to live there, but I am better prepared now for a visit. This is a great read for high school or college students because Mortimer does not neglect details and reminds us to think in a wholistic way about the life Shakespeare must have led. Mortimer anticipates questions we generate as we read and answers them thoroughly. It is a wonderful, absorbing history and if you don't come out with a few new deliciously barbed and pointed swear words, I'll be surprised.

The Time Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England is a tour de force of popular social history worthy of your attention

The past is indeed a different country. People do things and think things differently there. Ian Mortimer has brought the sights and sounds and especially the smells of Elizabethan England. Earlier this year I read "The Time Traveler Guide to Medieval England so was hooked on this excellent British author and scholar. Mortimer's style is intimate as if he were leading us benighted modern tourists on a fascinating trip back to Elizabethan England (1558-1603), The book is rich in descriptions of such varied topics as the landscape, food; crime and punishment; the arts; sanitation and health care; the people; entertainment; religion and how people made their livings. You can open this book on any page and be both enlightened and entertained. A sampling of quotations will give you insight into Mortimer's fine book:

I was a First Read Winner of this book and I liked it. I feel like I am well equipped to travel back in time and visit Elizabethan England, all I need is a Time Machine. This book makes for some interesting reading and is filled with lots of information that you normally never hear about. This will be a great book for any history buff or anybody who is curious as to what life was like then. I for one am glad I live in this century.

This is a very informative view of Scriabin's entire musical output by an author who is very well versed in Set Theory and Schenkerian Theory, two theoretical/analytical models suitable for apt descriptions of pitch phenomena in the specific repertory.

This book is written in a light-hearted manner for students who have completed the first year of college or high school AP calculus, and have just a bit of exposure to the concept of a differential equation. About the Author

Paul Nahin was born in California, and did all of his schooling there (Brea-Olinda High 1958, Stanford BS 1962, Caltech MS 1963 and - as a Howard Hughes Staff Doctoral Fellow - UC/Irvine PhD 1972, with all degrees in electrical engineering). He has taught at Harvey Mudd College, the Naval Postgraduate School and the Universities of New Hampshire (where he is now emeritus professor of electrical engineering) and Virginia.

Prof. Nahin has published a couple of dozen short science fiction stories in ANALOG, OMNI and TWILIGHT ZONE magazines, and has written 14 books on mathematics and physics. He has given invited talks on mathematics at Bowdoin College, the Claremont Graduate School, the University of Tennessee and Caltech, has appeared on National Public Radio's "Science Friday" show (discussing time travel) as well as on New Hampshire Public Radio's "The Front Porch" show (discussing imaginary numbers) and advised Boston's WGBH Public Television's "Nova" program on the script for their time travel episode. He gave the invited Sampson Lectures for 2011 in Mathematics at Bates College (Lewiston, Maine).

Book is a "Must Have" for scientists and engineers

This book is very unusual. It reads like a novel but every engineer and researcher should consider having it at arm's reach. The coverage of integrals is not that of a mathematician but that of a person calculating in the trenches. Rigor is not the focus but wide coverage and great utility is. Riemann and Lebesgue integrals are both defined, but the latter is quickly dismissed as not being important to his readers.
Nahin treats almost all of the areas of science and engineering where integrals arise. The book can easily be used a reference by jumping in at a topic one needs to work on now. In a short time the reader is able to be functional in an analysis at hand. Every step of each method is shown. There are Challenge Problems at the end of every chapter with solutions in the back of the book.
Mathematical niceties such as convergence, singularities, and interchange of integration order are noted but set aside until the end of each method. Then numerical check cases are calculated in Matlab to determine if there has been a problem along the way. The reader can of use Mathematica or Wolfram Alpha if that is suitable.
This book is not littered with gratuitous pictures of mathematicians with a brief caption. Instead there are copious references that discuss how early practitioners solved an integral and comparisons of different approaches. The contributions of GH Hardy and Richard Feynman occur throughout the book.
Knowledge of complex arithmetic and basic calculus are assumed at the beginning. At the next to last chapter Contour Integration is covered with a theoretical introduction.

A wonderfully unique book on integrals

Nahin's book on integrals is certainly not the only book aimed for undergraduates and devoted to integration. It is, however, unique in its down-to-earth, applied treatment of integration. Other texts of comparable levels of mathematical sophistication tend to be oriented towards transitioning students from the rote, mechanical treatment of calculus problems to the deeper understanding acquired in courses on real analysis. For this reason, they invariably spend a fair amount of time on topics like measure theory, the Lebesgue integral, rigor (both in presentation and exercises), and similar content that greatly benefits the undergraduate majoring in mathematics but is of little or no use to engineers, computer scientists, and others who intend to go on to more applied fields. Nor his Nahin's book simply a more thorough treatment of methods to find antiderivatives, of numerical integration, or in general the kind of extended nature of most books on integration that are intended for non-mathematics majors.

Instead, it is an exquisitely idiosyncratic presentation of integration that provides a both deeper understanding while remaining thoroughly applied in orientation and a way, or set of ways, to problem-solving that is not at all an extension of methods learned in typical calculus courses. In short, it provides a look inside integrals- as promised.

The book is wonderful in its depth and variety of proof techniques. It is also a plus that the proofs are step-by-step exercises in achieving the results. It is a genuine blend of the application and the art of problem solving coupled with historical perspective.
