Gives a broad overview. My professor chose this as it was 200+ pages over the previous textbook that was 600+ pages.

The chapters are usually less than 20 pages each, quick to read, and it is pretty current.

I purchased this book for a college class and so far I like the book it's thin, the chapters are of a short but decent length. The first chapter if you already know a lot about computers is kind of boring, but other than that great book. Book arrived in better condition than expected.

where good, excellent; where bad, awful

This book is valuable for anyone thinking of working in a prison. It offers two significant benefits.

ONE: it articulates, in great detail, the risk of becoming a victim of manipulation by prisoners. It shows how to avoid this danger.

TWO: Reading the book is an exercise in sorting out correctional staff's practice wisdom from their punitive fear mongering.

ONE: when members of the public think of the risks of working in prison, they imagine physical violence. In my experience, more correctional employees are manipulated into breaking rules and violating laws than suffer physical attacks. As best I can tell, more employees are "walked off," than are beaten or stabbed. The risks of physical injury or death are real, but can be mitigated by simple precautions. Preventing manipulation requires much more subtle work. This book does a solid job of showing how crooks do it, and how employees can immunize themselves to this risk.

Victimizers target potential victims by observing appearance and body language. They look for staffers whose dress and grooming betray discomfort in their own skin. They look for employees who are unhappy, frustrated, resentful, fearful. To check out these initial impressions, they test for willingness to let minor rules violations slide and to permit petty breaches of personal boundaries; using first names, brushing against the employee, floating sexual innuendos.

If the employee does not put a stop to these probes, the grooming begins in earnest. The staffer's unmet emotional needs are addressed. The employee with low self esteem is flattered. The victimizer lets him know how fascinating and wise the staffer is. The resentful employee is assured that management does not appreciate him the way the prisoner does. The staffer's sympathies are aroused by hard luck stories. The frightened staffer is assured the victimizer will make sure nothing happens to him.

Then the employee is inveigled into moving from toleration of minor violations to committing violations himself. The employee who shared his sandwiches is induced to bring in extra goodies. He is asked to mail letters that would not get past the prison censors. He asked to make unauthorized contact with the prisoner's family.

At some point the employee becomes afraid to let management know he has broken so many rules. He is isolated from other staff. Now the trap is sprung.

The employee is blackmailed into bringing drugs into the prison or into performing sexual favors. One officer was so deeply compromised that he brought in a uniform, piece by piece, until the prisoner had a full uniform and was able to escape.

The authors provide specific directions on how to keep from becoming a victim. The employee must set clear, firm, consistent limits. The employee must refuse to be isolated from the rest of staff.

Most critically, if the employee has been sucked into this vortex, he must let administration know. To my knowledge, absent a major felony or security breach, the worst that happens to an employee who turns himself in is loss of some pay and a temporary demotion. Most often, the employee receives a reprimand or caution. Hiring and training a new employee is time consuming and expensive. Management generally prefers a sadder and wiser employee to an untested new one.

The employee who fails to tell on himself winds up getting fired. He loses his job pension. If the violation is flagrant, he may be prosecuted. He is humiliated. It is an insidious process; I knew several employees whose overfamiliarity led to their dismissal. None had believed it could happen to them. None saw it coming, no matter how hard I, and other colleagues, tried to tell them.

The authors' greatest strength is their empathy with the victims of manipulation. They grasp fully what it is like to start out wanting to do the right thing, but end up committing crimes one would never have imagined preforming unprompted.

TWO The book does an excellent job of showing how correctional staff can be manipulated into breaking rules and into violating laws. Unfortunately, the book also fosters a punitive agenda. By inducing global, ultimately paralyzing, fear, the authors manipulate readers into betraying their own highest values.

In this book, fear is promoted by omission. The authors say that staff are vulnerable to manipulation if they are too "soft," or too "hard," but all examples are of staff who are too permissive or lenient. There are no examples of staff whose harshness and rigidity masks an underlying sense of personal inadequacy, which a con artist can exploit.

The authors state that not all prisoners try to manipulate staff; many are trying to turn their lives around. They then provide only one example of a prisoner making an appropriate request of staff. That example is weak and ambiguous. It is not helpful.

The authors clearly know their subject. None of their vignettes looks fabricated. All examples present scenarios a correctional employee can expect to face. I believe that had they wanted, they could have provided many examples of prisoners who relate appropriately to staff. The authors could have explained that these prisoners do not ask staff to break rules or laws. They do not make spurious offers to make the employee's life easier or ask the employee to run errands. Their interactions with staff are clearly part of the prisoner's effort to "turn his life around."

Providing such examples would have helped readers distinguish between prisoners who are "programming," from those who are manipulators. The authors could have offered guidance on how to respond effectively to prisoners who are trying to make positive changes in their lives. It is true that a prisoner who presents this way may be an extremely clever manipulator; I believe the authors had the knowledge and experience to help readers tell which prisoners are sincere and which ones not when they ask for help changing for the better.

Had they given as many examples of prisoners making positive changes as they did of prisoners manipulating staff, they then would have written a book that was balanced and genuinely helpful to staffers. Instead, they wrote a one-sided book, which instead of helping staffers deal confidently with prisoners, provokes fear; fear so pervasive that it corrodes the will.

Here is one clear example. During orientation this book was used to justify telling new employees that we should have no empathy for prisoners. I had not yet read the book, When I did read it, I discovered that the presenter had misunderstood what it does say about empathy, but he had grasped its general tenor.

I found the directive not to have empathy appalling, and shared this sentiment with several colleagues. To my surprise, they all agreed that it would be dangerous to have empathy with members of this population.

In response, I askedI of what disorders is the absence of empathy a defining characteristic. My colleagues knew: antisocial personality disorder, sociopathy, psychopathy. They knew this full well. I was not telling them anything they did not know. The fear instilled in them by the Department of Corrections had driven them to abandon one of their core values.

The Department had also made them less safe. If empathy is understanding what it feels like to be another person, would it not be safer to know what it feels like to be a prisoner than to insist on remaining ignorant of that perspective?

If the authors had valued empathy for prisoners as much as the do for staff, they would have written a masterpiece. As it is, their book is an incomplete, middling effort.

If you are working in corrections this book is a must

I've been in the Jail bussiness now since 1996, and I can tell you that a read of this book will instantly give you a years expereince or better in the corrections proffession. It includes all the "tricks" that inmates and criminals use to "get one over on you" Since these people have nothing to do all day but dream up new crimes and manipulation techniques, the knowledge this book will impart will allow one to "see them coming a mile away". Reading this book will enhance ones safety both in the corrections environment and on the street.

You don't have to be a 'Con' to Survive in a Convict's World

Games Criminals Play is a very easy to read, straight-forward account of the manipulations inmates are so skilled in often as a means of survival, and how easily susceptible the correctional employee can be. Accounts given demonstrate how easily the manipulations can begin; how difficult they can be to terminate, and how to proactively and professionally ward off the inmates' manipulative games. The book would serve anyone new to the corrections environment very well.

Akikur Mohammad, M.D., a board-certified psychiatrist with a second board certification in addiction medicine, is an award-winning academic and serves as a professor, specializing in addiction medicine, at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine.

Accessible and Timely for a General Audience

I thought this book was a great read for the layman/ non-science or medical person who wants a better understanding of what addiction is, and how it can be effectively treated. Some reviewers have panned this book as over-simplified, or a re-hash of research that has been around for awhile. While that may be true, the strength of this book is that it gives a very clear message about what addiction is -and is not- from a medical standpoint that is clear and well documented. It makes this information accessible to a broad audience who does not have access or an educational background to understand the technical aspects of the research on addiction, which - lets face it- are generally made public.
That alone makes it a very valuable resource for the layman to identify treatment protocols that work, and as an advocacy tool for addicts who have become trapped in the revolving door of the criminal justice system as a result of their addictions.

This book was ok. I was hoping that the part where it said styles of today was really styles of today. I could have spent my money on another book worth $40. Great for a coffee table book not for a reference for styling.

Admiring the black and white photos in Sagay's book is a delight. The hair styles are exotic and complex. She describes two different techniques, cornrowing and hair threading, with enough clarity and step by step photos that it is possible for a beginner to achieve one of the styles. There are also many outragously time-consuming examples that would challenge the most proficient hair stylist to reach new heights of difficulty. Sheer, outrageous fantasy is the only way to describe some of the hair styles, but they are still fun to see. Sagay gives a fair amount of historical background to show where and when the hairstyles originated. I was fascinated to discover that some of the hairdressing ingredients used in Africa were oil, charcoal and clay. The faces of the women and girls in the book are serene, joyful and proud. I wish that the book was updated to show current styles and that some of the photos were in color.

These hairstyles are "a blast from the past" and no matter what type of hair you have, you'll enjoy the many photos. The subject matter truly transcends ethnicities. You will learn about different cultures as you view the creative "hair art". My god-daughter wants to attend a highschool cosmetology course, so I bought this book as an inspiration. It worked! :)

The Lord is there to "deliver us from bondage" and often the bonds are too strong for us to break on our own!This book is changing my life, April 16, 2010by TrinaI bought this book to help me overcome my eating issues. Instead I found something that has changed my entire outlook on life. Using gospel principles and logic to find a way to want to change has been incredible. In finding what my heart really wants, which isn't another ice cream sunday, I have found new joy in taking care of my children and serving my family. I recommend this book strongly to anyone dealing with behavior they want to change.

This book has a different perspective from most self-help books that emphasize willpower. Written by a Mormon for other Mormons, it has many helpful points while framing the overall issue in terms of surrendering to God. This perspective may make the book not so useful for people with different belief systems.

New Insights on Change

Reading this book was like opening a window and letting fresh air into a room that had been shut up for a long time. The concepts and insights taught in the book are powerful and lifting. Understanding how we work and what makes us tick is so key to overcoming addictions and self defeating behaviors. Byrd and Chamberlain have really tapped into something powerful. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to make change in their life.

About the Author

Robert M. Haney, PE, is an electrical engineering consultant and adjunct instructor with nearly 40 years’ experience in the design, application, and field support of electronic controls and test equipment with United Technologies, Caterpillar, Delco Electronics, and other companies. He has taught at several institutions, including Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and holds a U.S. patent (assigned to J.I. Case) on a tractor draft control system that uses solenoid coils as sensors.

If you're looking for a reference book as a technician this book is a MUST BUY!! There have been countless times this book has come in handy when working int he field. It very easily links theory to practice.

Paperback book was a cheap black and white knockoff, with the cover only being in color. Not worth the purchase at the price I paid for.
The book did have the information I needed but I cannot trust buying product through Amazon. I felt ripped off and will not use Amazon for future products.

About the Author
WARREN MURPHY was born in Jersey City, where he worked in journalism and politics until launching the Destroyer series with Richard Sapir in 1971. A screenwriter (Lethal Weapon II, The Eiger Sanction) as well as a novelist, Murphy’s work has won a dozen national awards, including multiple Edgars and Shamuses. He has lectured at many colleges and universities, and is currently offering writing lessons at his website, WarrenMurphy.com. A Korean War veteran, some of Murphy’s hobbies include golf, mathematics, opera, and investing. He has served on the board of the Mystery Writers of America, and has been a member of the Screenwriters Guild, the Private Eye Writers of America, the International Association of Crime Writers, and the American Crime Writers League. He has five children: Deirdre, Megan, Brian, Ardath, and Devin.

*NOW* we're cooking.

If this is the first Destroyer novel you pick up, you've gotten it right on the first try. This is where the hysterical banter between Remo and Chiun really hits its stride, and you get character development in an action novel that readers had no right to expect back when these were written.
Lest ye forget, the Destroyer novels competed with "The Executioner", "The Butcher", and "Edge" for rack space at the drugstore. While Mack Bolan is rightly the inspiration for Marvel's Punisher character (it's so blatant they should cut a check to Don Pendelton's estate each time Dolph Ludgren makes his sewer soliloquy on late-night cable), the Mack Bolan character doesn't stand the test of time, and after about a dozen or so, it's all the same novel.
"Chinese Puzzle" sets the stage for an enjoyable twnety years of Destroyer novels. If you have to get one classic, this is the one to get.

On Target
By The Rectifier
Although I still enjoy #2 in The Destroyer series, this book is the one that charted the course to Remo and Chiun's long running success.

The story is good, but the best thing about this book is the beginning of the relationship between Remo and Chiun. The humor in this story stands up after 30 years. Although the story is somewhat dated now, this book deserves a read.

It's No "Puzzle" Why The Destroyer Kicks Ass 30+ Years Later!

Wow! The Destroyer is the action series for people who don't like action series. Forget the first two Destroyer books; they were the warm-up. This is the pitch! Book #3 is when the series really takes off. We get lots of hilarious dialogue, character development, and martial arts action. Even a little sinanju style sex!

As other reviewers have stated, it is the hysterical banter between Remo and Chiun that makes this series such a timeless, enduring classic. If you've seen the Destroyer movie, "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins," you know what I'm talking about.

The Destroyer is more social commentary and black comedy than brain-dead bombs and bullets, unlike many other action series--that's why it's not dated or forgettable 30+ years later. That's not to say the series is lacking in action, but that it is the characters who drive the plot forward, not a bunch of interchangeable action set-pieces that all blur together.

You can't go wrong with The Destroyer from #3: Chinese Puzzle forward.
