This book provides a thorough documentation of intervention in The Occupied Territories and paints a vivd picture of Israeli policy. Though the author's occasional use of "Top Secret Memos" to bolster claims is dubious, his detailed descriptions of Israel's political, social, and military operations suffice to build an argument: that Israel never intended on withdrawing from the territory it occupied in the aftermath of the Six Days War. I recommend directing your annoyingly Pro-Israel acquaintances to this book in order to remind them that modern Palestinian insurgency is rooted in years of colonial-style oppression.

Excellent, Well-Written, Hard-Hitting Overview

This is an extraordinarily well written, lucid and honest account of the history of the Occupied Territories and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since 1967. Mr. Bregman is a well-respected journalist and academic who has first hand experience serving in the Israeli Defense Forces. I have been listening to the book on Audible (extremely well-read) as well as reading alone. The most concise and incisive overview I have found on the 1967-2007 time period with excellent background and a current follow-up as of 2014.

Difficult subject, easy read.

This is a very accessible book, describing the different areas and events of the occupation in appropriately organized chapters rather than in a strictly chronological order. Resisting the urge to overload the reader with as many facts as can be squeezed into a book whilst maintaining a semblance of legibility, the author has instead created a focussed and balanced narrative centring around (mostly) the post-1967 history of the occupation. I particularly enjoyed the inclusion of transcripts, for example of when Israel bugged the phone lines and office (one side only of some phone calls?) of the President of the USA, which gave great behind the scenes glimpses at the diplomatic efforts being attempted.

Best Crochet Resource for the Dollar

This book is actually a compilation of materials from Jan Eaton and others. So, the text and instruction is excellent. I have many crochet books, and this one is my favorite. I learned how to do Tunisian crochet using it, and it has some of my favorite Eaton stitch patterns in it. As far as instructional, I thought it did an excellent job. No book will be as good as having a private instructor, but this comes close. I had no trouble understanding the instructions, and I thought the photos were as good as any other book on the market, with the added bonus that it features instructions for Tunisian crochet and has a beautiful stitch library. Also, the binding lays flat, so you can set it down while trying it out. If you have trouble learning from texts, I'd suggest a video or DVD usually available at your local public library. Oh, and I thought the instruction in the book clearer than that of Teach Yourself Visually Crocheting.

Does not work well as a handbook or a guide!

Okay, so I bought this book, with the anticipation that it would actually live up to it's title "The Crochet Handbook and Stitch Guide," and it would be something that I could actually add to my extensive crochet/knit library. When you buy books that have titles such as this, you do so with the understanding that it is efficient and all-inclusive in the world of crochet. This book didn't come close, and can be described as generic at best. I can honestly say this, because I am an advanced crocheter. There are much better resources out there on the internet, that offer better tutorials and information. To make this review easier for you, the average consumer, I will list the Pros/Cons:
Pros-
1) The book can lay flat, which can make it an easier read while you are working
2) The pictures are colorful
3) Font is readable
4) author includes pictures of some of the crochet symbols also used in charts

Cons-
1) The book starts off with talking about different crochet hooks, but didn't include a size chart that converts US sizes with other sizes. There was also no mention of other types of crochet needles or there uses. Examples would include the double-pointed crochet needle, Crohook, circular crochet needles, specialty needles that can be used by those who have carpal tunnel/arthritis/other wrist & hand issues, and steel vs aluminum vs plastic needles, etc.
2) There is also mention of other items to include in one's crochet bag, but there is no detail of how to use these (e.g. markers, row counters, waste yarn, notebook, etc.). For example, the book mentions that one should keep notes when they work. A novice crocheter reading this most likely say to themselves "Keep notes of what, how often should I take notes, etc."
3) The section that describes yarn is too brief and generic, and it doesn't offer a pictorial to show how these yarns look when they are crocheted.
4) Also there are various pictures of motifs throughout the book, but there is no mention of what type or brand of yarn was used to get the effect.
5) There is no instruction for left-handed crocheters.
6) While there are pictures of someone making the stitches, the actual walk-through of how the finished stitch is obtained is unclear. It would have been more beneficial to show arrows of how to actually produce the stitch than to show snapshots of before and after. The reading instructions are way to wordy and unclear.
7) Limited in the types of stitches discussed
8) When attempting to show stitches that involve a lot of detail (such as a spike stitch), it is more helpful to show this using yarns of different colors. It creates another dimension which allows the reader to see what type of effect it will have on the finished product.
9) Working in the round section is way too confusing. The author doesn't explain working in a round vs. a ring.
10) When discussing external vs. internal increases, there is no mention of when to do either and why.
11) One of the worst sections of the book was weaving in loose ends/fastening off. The book suggests to do this with a tapestry needle. Um, hello we are crocheting?!! This is creating more work, and making the task more difficult than it has to be. Weave in and/or fasten off using crochet!
12) Attempts to demonstrate a popcorn stitch, and mentions how a popcorn can be made from a group of separate stitches or can share one stitch at the base. There is no mention of how to complete the latter.
13) Unclear instructions on how to crochet with beads.
14) Crochet motifs used are very dull and outdated.
15) Sewn seams vs. crochet- there is no picture of the final product to show the differences between (e.g. how they look, when to use, etc.)the types of seams used.
16) The book shows various crochet symbols and then throws in one chart. There is not a detailed explanation of how to read the chart, etc.
17) Almost all of the book is written with chatty wording that didn't do a good job of explaining

In short, there are other issues of the book. I hope that the average consumer is able to get an idea of how limited the book is on the information. There are other great books out there especially on Amazon. Edie Eckman's books are a great place to start. The internet has some great starting places too such as crochetpatterncentral.com or mypicot.com. Save your $$, and don't bother to buy this one.

This is the book I've always wanted. To the negative poster, it's not supposed to show more than a square of the pattern. The instructions are excellent. I love the ring binder feature...it lays open on my craft table! Thank you!

Nice short BDSM story with caring characters

I enjoyed this little story and wish it continued to develop the relationship between Mr. Walker and Iris. It was well written and only took a few minutes to read the whole story but I would not mind additional stories by this author. Although (spoiler alert) I kind of wish they had time to shower before beginning to play. I mean, I couldn't help but recall how grungy one feels after an international flight in coach.

This is a wonderful story about a young stewardess who is unhappy with past relationships and jobs. During a flight she had an unexpected incident occur that led to a whole new level of understanding about herself and her body. I really enjoyed this book and will definitely read more by this author.

Love "The Cat Who Wore a Pot on Her Head" always! A must have with children in home

I can still hear my two-year old child (now 28) laughing so hard when we read this. Still one of her favorite books from her childhood so it was a must I find as I promised we still have somewhere in our home. Oops
She will know for sure this is not hers since the condition of the one I just purchased is too good. Love it! Oh I will confess, but I won't tell her how little I paid.

Hey! Don't blame us for enriching phonemic awareness of pre- and early readers with this hilarious story. That's what's happening at our house because our six year-old wants to hear this story every night. When the eldest of 10 kittens wears a shiny pot as a hat, she has a hard time hearing her mother's instructions. Highly original and nonsensical household chaos ensues. The wacky rhyming text in this inventive plot does not fail to induce uncontrolled giggling. (Our favorite: "Mup the moop on the feep?") Witty illustrations highlight the absurdity of each situation when the cat with the pot on her head repeats what she thought she was told. Depending on your point of view, the moral of the story could either be to always or to never wear a pot on your head!

Long-time friend of the cat with the pot on her head

This is the best book ever written! I am 20 now and still in love with "Bendemolina, Bendemolina, the cat with the pot on her head". This was my ratty dog-eared most favorite book of all time when I was little--it got read every night. It became a part of our family traditions (i.e. anytime I wasn't listening I got called a Bendemolina). By the way, I can't remember if that's how you spell the kitty's name, but that's how it sounds--and wow, that book has great sounds! About the Author
Stephen Fishman is the author of many Nolo books, most recently Tax Deductions for Professionals. Other titles include Deduct It! Another fine, helpful entry from Nolo - a must for small tax-exempts.

Tax-exempt nonprofits are a big business. $3.4 trillion in assets and 9.4 million employees, about 7.2% of the total United States workforce. But not every tax-exempt nonprofit is a multi-billion dollar foundation. There are tens of thousands of nonprofits that are small, many of which work with volunteer staffs. Often legal expertise is lacking and people inadvertently do things that endanger the tax-exempt status of these organizations.

This book is designed for them, for anyone in a tax-exempt who doesn't have access to competent legal advice on their IRS Code Section 501(C)(3) tax-exempt status. It is, in a very general way, a lawyer in a book.

Attorney Stephen Fishman provides in very clear language guidance on every aspect of maintaining your Section 501(c)(3) status. He avoids convoluted legal language and uses plain English (bless him!). He begins with the Form 990 which is a disclosure of the tax-exempt nonprofits finances and is publicly accessible. He covers the importance of accounting and record keeping - something that often goes undone in volunteer organizations.

He helps the uninitiated distinguish between employees, volunteers and independent contractors. These distinctions are very important. Fail to withhold and pay employment taxes and the IRS doesn't care who you are or what you did, they go after you.

Next he moves on to contributions of goods, cash and services and how to deal with them. This is a crucially important subject.

Lots of Section 501(c)(3) raise lots of money and pay their executives very, very well. What's to stop an a aggressive fundraiser from setting up a tax-exempt and paying themselves huge salaries? Not much really, but Fishman does point out how to get caught and what happens when you do.

UBIT stands for Unrelated Business Income Tax. At one time, a tax-exempt could engage in a business and not pay taxes on the revenue. Not so much any more.

Finally, Fishman distinguishes between permissible lobbying activities and the forbidden political campaign activities.

This is a well-written, thorough examination of tax issues relating to Section 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organizations. Even though the subject is narrow, the book still runs to almost 450 pages. Fishman and Nolo have done a good job here and anyone who volunteers or works for a small or medium-sized tax-exempt that doesn't have full access to specialist legal or accounting tax advice will do well to purchase, read and continually consult this book.

Worth it, big time

I can't even tell you how useful this book is. As someone who is just starting a nonprofit, this guide is so, so valuable. It has paid me back in spades simply due to the fact that conversations with my attorney and account are much shorter, because I'm already somewhat educated on the material... Of course, I still go to the "experts" on some things, but this has been so helpful to have, and it allows me to ask tough questions of those "experts" that I do hire.

I've been informed by my attorney that when nonprofits first start, that they oftentimes end up having to close because they don't completely understand everything that's required to maintain their tax status. One example is that you can't become politically involved. Also, you need to start showing a certain percentage of donations within a certain time frame for your new nonprofit. Many, many other things too. This is an absolute must-read for key nonprofit individuals that are in leadership positions. The IRS doesn't allow ignorance to be an excuse, so you're going to need to get educated. And, if you're a nonprofit, you probably don't have, or want, to spend a lot of your money talking to someone when you can get much of the same information in a book. Of course we can't know all the information by heart, but a good foundation of knowledge will set you up for success.

Great resource for non profits

This books delivers comprehensive resources for non profit organizations. I personally volunteer in one, and I did not know our treasurer had so much paperwork to do. Actually, we have realized that there are some items, even he did not know.

Due to the exploits of some badly managed organizations, it seems like IRS has become much stricter on the review of 501(c) filings. You need to handle everything from donations, to travel refunds; from volunteer works, to paying for your employees (ours has only volunteers, even then there is a lot to file).

The book covers all these areas, that you know, and you probably do not know, in great detail, and easily followed language. It starts with a general overview of various non-profit organizations (public charities, private charities, schools, churches, etc), and then goes into describing every aspect of your IRS related paperwork: yearly 990 forms, public disclosures of them, board meeting minutes, volunteer work, expenses, and so on.

If you participate in, or manage a non-profit, this is a definite must have resource. Even if you have a professional handle your paperwork, it will allow you to keep everything in check (we have been burned by this in one occasion).
