The world is getting smaller

“Yes, the consumer in us wants Wal-Mart prices, with all the fat gone. But the employee in us wants a little fat left on the bone, the way Costco does it, so that it can offer health care to almost all its employee, rather than just less than half of them, as Wal-Mart does. But the shareholder in us wants Wal-Mart’s profit margins, not Costco’s. Yet the citizen in us wants Costco’s benefits, rather than Wal-Mart’s, because the different ultimately may have to be paid for by society.”

The world has changed and it continues to change and not in the notable, transforming ways history has seen before. Governments are not being toppled. Political revolutions are not exploding. But the power is shifting, it is shifting the people.
With the rapid rise of consumer technology, more people are connected than ever before. The world has become much smaller, or as Thomas L. Friedman says, “The world is flat.”

Consumers do not have to rely on the restricted knowledge of real estate agents to find the perfect home, as countless internet sites can show you the entire market. No longer do we have to drive from car lot to car lot to find a great deal on a used car. And no longer do you have to throw on a suit and walk up and down an office building looking for a job. The information has come to the people and the people have changed the game.

Now small companies with little or no capital can become a global player over night. Established companies have learned to adapt and quickly.

The World is Flat by Thomas L. Friedman is a very interesting read on the changing times. The latest edition of this book was written in 2007, right before the start of the great recession, so it would be interesting to see if Friedman’s thoughts were changed by this major market malfunction.

This book is good but a little long. Friedman includes a lot of interviews and anecdotes, however his stories do not have the power or sharpness of Malcolm Gladwell or the Freakonomics authors.

If you are an isolationist then don't buy this book.

I haven't even finished the book yet and i'm already regretting not having come across it sooner. This is something that should be required reading in high school, at the least. The book is well written, and the story flows in a nice way (so far at least) that keeps the reader interested. Unless you are some backwards Luddite then I would almost be willing to guarantee that this book will help you to understand the world as it is evolving to be, quite aside from how many people may have seen it coming, or even wanted it to be.

The Book is Flat

The content of the book (the quotes occupy one third of the content!) can be summarized in a few sentences. 1) Computer technologies, automation, and especially the Internet have opened up new opportunities for everyone. We can be rich, we can work together. 2) Free trade and capitalism is the best solution to all the problems of the world. 3) America needs a better system of education. And that's it.

The World is Flat seethes from the excess of demagogy, which makes the author a great candidate for a politician. The content of the book is painfully outdated. Author instead focus on the mechanisms that shape the beginning of the twenty-first century, persistently presents case studies.

Conclusion; if someone wants to scramble through for more than 600 pages to find some valuable comments and bon mots, then I wish you good luck and a lot of patience.

They interviewed doctors, shark hunters, former prisoners, bus drivers, wedding planners, boxing coaches, skydivers, escape artists and a multitude of other experts to provide the best, most succinct tips for a variety of scenarios. The "Good Guy Skills" section is the strongest, as it explains techniques for maneuvers many readers wouldn't have a clue how to execute. There's information on interrogating a suspect, saving a patient who's flatlined, saving someone who's hanging from a cliff and spy-proofing a hotel room. The random facts are oddly intriguing: e.g., to catch a great white shark, don't chain a chunk of meat to the end of a pier; when a suspect looks to the left during an interrogation, it often means she's lying. The Borgenichts then offer counsel on situations involving love (to stop a wedding, have your speech planned ahead of time), the paranormal (the Jedi mind trick is simple manipulation) and escape (try getting on the wrong train if you need to fake out pursuers at a train station). Throughout, quotes from The Fugitive, The Shawshank Redemption and other films remind readers how one might find oneself in such predicaments. Almost practical and definitely entertaining, this is one how-to guide Clint Eastwood and Charlie's Angels would not want to be without.

A Pretty Good Book

The Action Hero's Handbook is a fascinating little book. While I was a little disappointed in the Vulcan Nerve Pinch and the Jedi Mind Trick, the rest of the book had very interesting and potentially useful information like, how to get out of handcuffs and how to escape a sinking cruise ship.

This is a great book to give to people who live unusual lives or a book to buy for yourself if you're the kind of person who travels or just find adventure wherever you go. You might not have a great need to catch a white shark, but it's always possible these days to encounter someone with a gun that you may need to disarm or deal with an intoxicated driver who seems bent on running you over, and the Action Hero's Handbook tells you what to do in both circumstances.

As great as the book is, I gave it four stars only because a few minor things are missing: for example, while the book tells you how to avoid getting hit by a car or a truck, it doesn't cover SUVs, which to me is an important little detail. But overall, it's a great book to have.

"Chicks only like guys with great skills" - Napoleon Dynamite

This is a great "coffee table" book. Something anyone would find interesting and amusing.

The book is broken down into 5 sections:

1. Good Guy Skills

2. Love Skills

3. Paranormal Skills

4. Fighting Skills

5. Escape Skills

With each skill, the author introduces when and why an action hero will need to have the skill to follow. This portion of each section is humorous. The author then goes on to actually describe the skill, in step-by-step fashion. The instruction in this book actually comes from individuals who have great experience with the given skills. Upon seeing this book, you may not exactly expect to get official information, as it is filed in the "homor" section at most booksellers, but you are in fact getting solid, real information, which I feel makes the whole book even funnier. It's as if this is the handbook for the training of the modern real-life action hero.

It's a very amusing read - or just something to thumb through while you're waiting for your wife/girlfriend to get ready to go out.

Highly recommended.

A must read!

Bonner Frank Fellers is an ilustrious diplomat, from the times of the surrender of Japan and an invaluable helper to Gral. McArthur during that period. He did not stop there but immersed into the politics and diplomacy of Post WWII. His knowledge and vision on the Cold War, which Wings For Peace is all about, it is a must read, if one is interested in understanding how we got where we are today, by going through the Cold War period as an introduction to international politics to the second half of the XX century. It is a must read and a reference manual to the curious. Love it and won't leave my library with so many handwritten notes I've already put in it!

Who Was Harriet Tubman?

No one knows the exact year in which Harriet Tubman was born. It may have been 1820 or 1821. Almost everyone thought the birth of a slave baby wasn’t worth remembering. Born a slave, Harriet Tubman grew into a brave and daring young woman. She was brave enough to escape from slavery. She was daring enough to help others escape, too. Because she led so many to freedom, she was called “Moses.” Like Moses in the Bible, Harriet Tubman believed that her people should be free. And she risked her life many times to help them become free. Even after she had escaped safely from the South, she went back to take other slaves north to freedom. Here is her story.

Chapter 1
Life in Maryland

Sometime around 1820 in Maryland, a slave named Harriet Ross had a baby girl. Neither Harriet, who was called Old Rit, nor her husband, Ben, could read or write, so they couldn’t record the year of the baby’s birth. No one else thought it was worth doing. But Old Rit loved her tiny child and wanted to protect her. She hoped her little girl, whose nickname was Minty, would learn to sew, cook, or weave. Then she could be a house slave and avoid the backbreaking work picking crops like tobacco, corn, or wheat in the fields.

We purchased this at full price because my kids started liking history. On black history months, H.T. would also be one that they will learn or eventually learn, so we started putting this on the library so it would be read eventually or whenever it spikes the interest. I read it and I think it is easy to read but I wish they would incorporate it to be a little funnier so it is not so text book like.

A powerful indictment of criminal "justice" in the US

This is an important and timely book. Logan, a Mennonite who teaches at a Quaker school (Earlham College in Indiana) has provided a clear and devastating critique of the American criminal (in)justice system. In careful, even understated prose, he details layer upon layer of social devastation-to the convicts who are treated like pieces of trash, to the victims of crime who are shunted aside by the system, and to the broader society that finds more and more resources being poured into a more and more ineffective (even counter-productive) prison-industrial complex. A strong sense of humanity, grounded in his Christian faith, underlies Logan's analysis.

By far the strongest part of the book is the first half, where Logan lays out the problems. He is quite persuasive in helping us see the social consequences of our society's linking the violence of retributive philosophies and practices that takes already damaged people (convicted criminals) and damages them even further through dehumanizing punitive practices together with a powerful trend toward privatizing prisons and making them serve corporations' lust for profits.

Logan writes this book as a theologian. He seeks to develop a case for what he calls "good punishment" where violations are taken seriously but become an occasion for seeking to heal the damage done rather than an occasion to unleash the forces of vengeance and (now) capitalist extraction of profits from human misery. He draws especially on the work of the pacifist Methodist theological ethicist Stanley Hauerwas in this constructive effort.

I greatly appreciate Logan's attempt to respond to this terrible crisis theologically. Indeed, the churches and the larger society are in dire need of such responses. The Dutch law professor, Herman Bianchi, makes the evocative statement that since the western theological tradition has so much responsibility for the crises we find ourselves in, one important step in a positive direction would be to apply some "homeopathic" therapy where we draw on this same tradition for resources that might heal the damage it has done. Logan's work is an important effort at such homeopathic therapy.
