About the Author
Karen J. Greenberg is the executive director of the Center on Law and Security at the New York University School of Law. She has a Ph.D. in American political history from Yale and teaches in the European Studies Department at NYU. She is a former Vice-President of the Soros Foundations/Open Society Institute and the founding director of the Program in International Education. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the author of numerous articles on the United States and Europe during World War II and an editor of the Archives of the Holocaust, Columbia University Series. She is the co-editor of the recently published The Torture Papers: The Road to Abu Ghraib.

A discussion of modern torture

This book is not an exhaustive or in-depth study of torture. That being said, it does present both sides of the debate over the use of torture and its refined definition during the Bush administration. The book is a compilation of articles by various authors that weigh in on the topic. For my purposes, this book served my need to get an overview of the debate very well. It does cover some of the legal implications of the Bush definition of torture, but doesn't really provide much historical background. Of course, the title does not necessarily suggest it would. I would recommend this book as a source for learning about torture and the moral considerations that are at the center of the debate.

An Important Book on a Regrettably Current Issue

Karen Greenberg has done a good job of assembling essays on the issue of torture. It's evidence of the intellectual integrity of this work that it includes pro-torture arguments as well as anti-torture ones: it's important for those of us fighting to rid the U.S. of this medieval scourge (and bring justice to high government officials who have authorized it) to familiarize ourselves with the rationalizations of our adversaries.

Nearly 1000 cartoons were produced by the seven major animation studios in the U.S. between January 1, 1939, and September 30, 1945--the immediate pre-World War II period up to the cessation of hostilities. More than a quarter of the cartoons substantially refer to the war, and thereby are invaluable in helping to understand American attitudes and Hollywood's reflection of them. The meat of Doing Their Bit is a filmography with extremely detailed summaries of the 260 or so commercially produced, animated, war-related shorts, 1939-1945. There is also a good bit of overall commentary on these films as a group. Two chapters wrap up animated cartoons of World War I and the general political tenor of animated talkies of the 1930s. This edition also includes a new chapter on the outrageous government-sponsored Pvt Snafus.

About the Author
Film historian and media propaganda specialist Michael S. Shull currently teaches film history at George Washington University and teaches mass communications at Montgomery College (both in the Washington, D.C., area). He lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland. David E. Wilt is a librarian at the University of Maryland in College Park. Together they authored Hollywood War Films, 1937-1945 (1996). Wilt is also the author of The Mexican Filmography (2003).

Cartoons go to war - An excellent look at WWII Hollywood

This book is a must for anyone interested in animation history, because it focuses primarily on Hollywood cartoons produced during the years surrounding World War II. All the major studios, from Disney to Warners produced animated cartoons that in some way or another touched on the European conflict, and stepped up production when the war approached their native soil.
The cartoons would often be morale boosters for those who had family fighting the war, and topical humor would be found in cartoons poking fun at Hitler, Mussolini and Hirohito, although many would also make light of situations on the home front - women in the work force, rationing, war bonds, etc.
Complete essays discussing different periods of WWII give examples of the rise of wartime references and their eventual disappearance when the war ended. A very thorough list of cartoons is featured with plot summaries and notes of what type of topical references appear in the films.
Reading this book gives one a surprising look at the social impact of cartoons produced during these years, and since many of these cartoons contain what are considered nowadays racial caricatures, it is certain to make you look at cartoon animation in a whole different perspective from much of the tripe that passes for animation today. If you own books by Leonard Maltin or Jerry Beck, this is a perfect companion.

Cartoon Heroes!

I am an avid History of Animation educator. I love reading and learning about the Hollywood studios of the 30's and 40's to see how thier studios worked and animated. This book was incredibly inspiring and informational. It has a nice range of studios depicted in the time period and how each contributed to the war effort. The book selects multiple cartoons from this era and explains the hidden use of propaganda in the shorts. It also depicts what the animators and studio teams had to go through to even work on the shorts! Absolutely amazing, greatly filled with information.

The complaints about subjects being left out of the book are valid, but Microsoft is careful to tell all test takers that some material on the test will come from the Microsoft Knowledgebase and from TechNet articles. If you are concerned about the coverage of material, go to the Microsoft certification web site, print out the test objectives for the test you are studying for, and make sure that you study something on each of the test objectives. There is no one book that can or will cover the entire depth and breadth of this test, but this one comes close. It is written for someone that has little or no experience with Windows Server 2003, and covers each topic rather completely. Some more advanced users will object to that, saying that it is too basic or too wordy. They should use a "test prep" book (something from Exam Cram series, for example) rather than this book. If you are starting from near zero, this is a good book for you. The videos are helpful, but I wish they were podcasts so that I could listen to them while I am driving.

Shinder does it again!

I've read all of Shinder's ISA/MS Security books over the past couple of years, and thought they were excellent. I was psyched to see they were writing all of these MCSE 03 books. I just passed the 70-290 exam after using this book as my only study guide. The test is really hard, and you definitely can't just pass by reading a book (you really need experience as well), but you do need a great study guide and this is the one. The level of detail in this book is absolutely incredible, and you can tell that the authors have actually tested all of this stuff. I also really like the feature at the end of the book where they show all of the test questions with the answer choices and explanations of correct and incorrect answers all in one place. This makes it very easy to review your responses to figure out what you got wrong and more importantly why. I've got all the other books in the series to prepare for the rest of the exams.

The book is good (Skip the DVD)

The book is written pretty well and is easy to read. The subject matter is appropriate for the book. I feel that I should be able to face the certification test after reading this book and a little practice with the exam simulations. My one problem with this book is the DVD. The DVD feature is one of the main reasons I was swayed to purchase this book instead of others in the category. The DVD leaves a lot to be desired. The DVD is basically the instructor going over the book material while flipping through power point slides. You can get the same information in more detail from the book. If the vendors really wanted to make this a 5 star product they would include the exercises from the book on the DVD. Give us something more than we can get from the book. If you guys just wanted to play with DVD authoring, do it at home! Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Move over Bob Mayer and Dan Brown, there's a new kid in town. Michael Grumley's book "Breakthrough" was a home run but he completely knocks it out of the park with "Amid the Shadows!"

Sarah Baxter's mother is violently murdered but the forces of evil are really after Sarah. She has a supernatural gift that a very powerful person wants to extinguish. She ends up in the care of social worker Christine Rose who has her own set of issues. Sarah and Christine find themselves in a terrifying conspiracy that has the fate of the world in the balance. It is imperative that Sarah live but Christine can barely take care of herself. Sarah and Christine find there is someone very special looking out for them.

From the very first few pages, I was completely drawn into the story and could not put the book down. This is one book I will definitely read several times. The characters are very well developed and the plot will keep you guessing all the way to the end. Just when you think you got it figured out, the story takes a very quick turn or another twist is added. This book is full of great characters and adrenaline laced action. Michael leans on his IT background. The history and science are well researched. This is an author you will want to keep an eye on. If "Amid the Shadows" is an indicator, Michael Grumley will be providing us with more great reads!

Another winner from Michael Grumley

Another excellent read from Michael Grumley - the kind that you keep next to you on your morning commute so that you can read another few sentences at each red light (yes, I really did).

The storyline is both imaginative and gripping. You start out needing a bit of a willing suspension of disbelief at the premise but the adrenalin-filled plot and the richly drawn characters quickly have you forgetting any thoughts of unreality and reading faster and faster to see what comes next, and in that Grumley definitely does not disappoint.

I admit I was a bit leery of this one at first after reading a few reviews talking about the "religious" plot, but having read it can say with confidence that this is a storyline that will appeal to those who are uninterested in religious themes as well. The religious, or rather faith-based, theme informs the story in a Dan Brown type style, it's not heavy-handed and doesn't preach or convey any kind of missionary agenda.

Now the only question which remains is when is Grumley's next book coming out?

Just finished this really exciting book which has an unusual and imaginative plot. I've read Mr. Grumley's previous book, Breakthrough, which was excellent and he has produced another of the same caliber. Who would think to use 'soldiers' sent by God to battle the evil of the world and inject them into a high paced thriller. There is tension, nail biting suspense and a horrible fear that nothing is going to happen in time to save the devastation of the planet. In the centre of all of this is a little girl with enormous powers which she takes for granted but poses a threat to the power of the man who has set all of the deadly plot in motion. He holds an almost unassailable position within the US government so has free reign to carry out his evil mission and he has many people to do his bidding together with a brilliant cyber hacker in his employ who will place a stranglehold on the world's computers. This is terrorism which is dangerously powerful. Be prepared to be frightened at the possibility of something so deadly happening.

After hearing this author lecture on this very same subject, I became interested in following God's command to disciple. I have read this book about six times - not because it is difficult to understand; but, because it explains things so well. Somehow, in Christian society, we have tended to forget this important Titus 2 mandate. Is it scary? Yes. Is it doable? Yes. Need inspiration with Biblical instruction? Read this. I thank this author from the bottom of my heart for sharing the importance, practicality, and ease of discipleship.

About the Author
Timothy D. Schowalter received his Ph.D. degree in Entomology from the University of Georgia in 1979. Since 1981, he has been a professor of entomology at Oregon State University, Corvallis, studying the effects of environmental changes, including natural and anthropogenic disturbances, on arthropod communities in temperate and tropical ecosystems, and effects of herbivores and detritivores on primary production, carbon flux, biogeochemical cycling. From 1992-93, he served as Program Director for Integrative and Theoretical Ecology at the National Science Foundation, where he was involved in developing global change and terrestrial ecosystem research initiatives at the federal level. He served as a U.S. delegate to international conventions to develop collaboration between U.S. Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and long term sites in Hungary and East Asia and the Pacific.

Insects in Ecosystems

Insects are the most abundant animals on earth (even if they're absent from the oceans). They affect man's food and fibers. Insect pests of stored grain are the most economically important ones. Insect ecology has often been viewed as the study of these pests of fields and forests.

Timothy Schowalter's handsome book, Insect Ecology, presents the insects as components of ecological systems -- Ecosystems. In this context, insects appear as important cogs in forest and stream ecosystems, even essential ones.

The book moves from the study of individual insects (Chapters 1-4) and insect populations (Chapters 5-7) to Community Ecology, or assemblages of insect species (Chapters 8-10). At the ecosystem level, the importance of herbivory (Chapter 12), Pollination (Chapter 13) and Decomposition (Chapter 14) are considered. Chapter 15 evaluates insects as regulators of ecosystem processes.

A final synthesis reviews insect and ecosystem ecology in the context of conservation and restoration, pest management, and deteriorating environmental conditions.

I believe that Dr. Schowalter has put insects into their proper perspective, as dynamic and essential features of the natural landscape, be it terrestrial or aquatic. I recommend it to entomologists and ecologists alike, as well as naturalists who'd like a better grasp of the function of our ecosystems.

Tim Schowalter's Insect Ecology is a versatile volume that provides a breadth of information for both the professional as well as the amateur entomologist. My students are frequently borrowing this book from my office library, and although I am forever reminding them to return it, what is a wonderful tribute to Tim's volume that it is in such great demand by undergraduates! The text ranges from individual insect chapters (1-4) to populations (5-7) to community ecology of insects (8-10), and then some appropriate special chapters such as herbivory and conservation toward the end. If anyone wants an entomology book that satisfies a variety of both classroom or expedition needs, this is the one to buy!
