The Senoi Praaq is a Malaysian special forces unit originally created in 1956 by the British colonial authorities to fight communism during the Malayan Emergency. The term Senoi Praaq, which roughly translates as war people, stems from the Semai language and is the basis of a colorful legend in Malaysia. The unit is largely comprised of non-Malay tribal peoples known collectively as the Orang Asli of Peninsular Malaysia. Jumper details Senoi Praaq inception as a private army and its subsequent development into an affiliate of the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) in this fast paced and often graphic account of irregular warfare as it applies to counterinsurgency.

The unit began as a creature of British Military Intelligence and fought in the deep jungle as Special Air Service (SAS) prot�g�s, eventually replacing the latter upon Malaysian independence from Great Britain. They then served as mercenaries employed by the United States Central Intelligence Agency in Vietnam and later fought on Borneo during Malaysia's own undeclared war with Indonesia. Today the unit remains under arms and heads up a large paramilitary apparatus maintained in conjunction with conventional military forces. Malaysia's capacity to project force throughout South East Asia should not be underestimated, Jumper warns. The Senoi Praaq is a unique fighting force upon which Malaysia may rely to preserve her sovereignty.

Big and Beautiful

Much like another of Phaidon's giant tomes, "The Art Book," this book provides an alphabetical tour through the work of a number of seminal photographers. I'm no expert in photography, so I cannot comment on the appropriateness of the selections. However, as someone interested in learning a bit more about the craft, I am very happy with the purchase. As said before, this book is similar to "The Art Book," in that it provides on each page a single representative work of a particular photographer, the selections presented in alphabetical order by the artist's name. Each selection is accompanied with a little explanatory text and a short list of other photographers in the book with similar work. The selections are printed reasonably large, and the book is constructed from sturdy paper of good quality.

Note: This is not a book of cheery photos of landscapes and pets (although there are some of both in here). Some of the images can be quite disturbing as they depict scenes of war, death, or suffering. Art is not always fun. Also, if you're some sort of a prude, you may be upset at the frequent nudity.

A photographers "Must Have" book that is difficult to put down

Spanning 150+ years of photography and arranged alphabetically by artist this is is a superb collection of classic, controversial, historical, thought-provoking, inspiring and sometimes horrifying photographs. Just choosing one image per photographer must have been incredibly difficult and Ian Jeffrey has done a superb job.
As others have said, this is not for the faint-hearted. There are some truly heart-wrenching images in here. But, that's the whole point!
This is photography at it's most impactful.

About the Author
Alistair Seton graduated from Oxford University and Aberdeen College of Education, and spent five years in Arab and West African countries before coming to Japan in 1972. Since then, he has taught at various universities and was a guest lecurer for eight years at Kobe University. He is a professor at Tezukayama Gakuin University. In 1993, he founded and still edits Daruma, a quarterly magazine on Japanese antiques and art. He lives in Kobe with his university professor wife and their two children.

What a wonderful insight into arts of Japan. With simple explanations about the history and culture of Japan and the influences of China and Korea this is a most comprehensive book about Japanese antiques. A good reference for the would be collector. Couldn't put it down.

Best introduction to Japanese antiques in print

If you love Japanese antiques, you cannot live without this survey, with superb photography, spectacular taste, ecclectic choice, and scholarly background by the editor of Daruma magazine. All of the major collectible fields are covered with practical, informative text, and beautifully photographed select finds. The photographic choices are representative, varied and exquisite. Not merely an introduction, the work serves as a springboard to understanding and appreciating many of the accessible antiques from the Edo and Meiji periods in particular. If the book had an index of marks for each type of collectible, it would be perfection. As-is, I like the book so much that I have bought extra copies for my friends, and a new copy when mine started to get worn.

I bought this book for my husband and he loves it. Then I bought another for my son-in-law. We collect Japanese art, ceramics, furniture and other antiques from Japan. This book is helpful for evaluating what we already own and also will help in future purchases.

Great place to start studying for HSK

I used this book to prepare for the HSK exam.

The audio is clear, but the tracks should have been broken down more instead of one long audio track for the entire exam. Since I studied with the book certain sections at a time, I had to keep skipping forward to the correct place where I left off.

The quality of the paper is very good.

The practice exams in the book are VERY similar to what is on the actual exam. Using this book with my intro to Chinese book, I was able to pass the exam within 2 months.

I skipped straight to the level three test but I did use the book. It was useful and this is a great place to have a review of your Chinese. That said, it is all in pinyin and I would encourage new learners of the language to reach beyond that. For this reason, I gave it four stars, it isn't as reflective of the product itself as it is the test itself which carries over.
