Jack M. Sasson, the Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies and Hebrew Bible at Vanderbilt University, lives in Nashville, TN. He is past president of the American Oriental Society and the International Association for Assyriology.

This book is a disappointment in many ways. First, the author is a vague minimalist. He says that the previous authors Boling and Wright wrote of the "substantial history" of Joshua and Judges. Of course they were from the Albright School so that automatically makes them suspect. His comment about archaeology would have more weight if he were an archaeologists and I may add people I know doing near eastern archaeology do not share his view. Second, he virtually implies the small value of the LXX. One would need to do research on how accurate the LXX is/was in comparison with the current Masoretic text. Third, listening to "scholars" such as Niditch and Ackermann certainly "authenticates" his research. Neither of these authors would I rate as first-line scholars but more in line with a special interest theology. Whether you are man or woman what has that got to do with exegeting a text if you are being as honest and forthright as possible? The price is very expensive in my view for what you get from the book. Go somewhere else for a good commentary.
