Fantastic book!

What a great way to learn about Paris. My 2 year old daughter really loved the book. The illustrations are colorful and vibrant and done with so much detail, you really have the feeling you are in Paris. Can't wait for those two girls Oc�ane & Elodie to discover the world. Very cute!

Loved it! I've been following Canadian expat mom on Facebook and Pinterest. Love listening to her adventures and insights on her family travels. It's great to see a story for children, too. My favourite part was how the author explained parts of French culture - perfect for kids to learn as they listen/read. Can't wait for the next one!

Eisenhower agreed to train Ibn Sa'ud's army, Kennedy sent jets to defend the kingdom, and Lyndon Johnson sold it missiles. This book has a labor-history focus that transcends traditional breaks between diplo and social history. The title does not capture the book's incredible scope and synthesis. WOW! People should, IMO, get this book now.

WOW! Hard to imagine a book withe more disparate intersections of key themes in 20th century US AND ALSO international history! The only book I could compare it to is the incredible Thy Will Be Done: Nelson Rockefeller, Evangelism, and the Conquest of the Amazon in the Age of Oil, a title which ALSO completely fails to capture the essence of its intersections. That and of course, the best book yet written on the history of the US National Security State, JFK and the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters, a book that Charlie Rose censored from PBS when RFK Jr. held it up in Dallas, January 11, 2013.

Among other things this book helps you understands key buried Big Inch and Little Inch moments that run through the history of the 20th century Democratic Party. There is too much money to be made in our not seeing this longer term view, so this book is necessary.

An Account with Does Not Recognize The Long Term Diplomatic Brilliance of the House of Saud

Most accounts of the establishment of the Saudi oil bonanza, and this one in particular, concentrate on the manipulative power of Aramco and the U.S. government in bringing a sweet deal to American investors and creating an unequall alliance between the United States and Saudi Arabia. They analyze a transaction that unfolded over three quarters of a century in terms of colonial aggrandizement by the west and articulately the United States. This although Saudi Arabia was never colonized, and eventually nationalized its supposed colonizer (Aramco) on favorable terms.

These accounts consistently fail to grasp is the brilliance that the Saudis, and especially Ibn Saud, demonstrated in the long dance which brought such great wealth to Saudi Arabia. The Saudi kingdom was politically fragile and militarily weak. It completely lacked the financial and technical ability to locate and develop its resource. Their choices were the British, who they had previously found unreliable, the French, the Dutch and the Americans. The French and the Dutch were pitifully weak financially, militarily and technologically compared to the Americans. And with the Americans they could deal with Aramco, a private corporation, which was an independent force not directed or controlled by the American government. Indeed, through Aramco, the Saudis could influence American policy in ways they never could have achieved directly. In addition Aramco delivered the goods technologically and financially, and was an ideal temporary instrument for the Saudis to increase their leverage and power through their oil resource.

The winner in this elaborate game was Saudi Arabia. It's success in the world oil market is due in part to the richness of the resource that is located in their country. But it is also due to a very wise and patient conduct of a long game by the leaders of the country, especially Ibn Saud, who had learned this craft well dealing with the British before, during and immediately after World War I. Ibn Saud is one of the most successful statesmen of the 20th Century. In the long run, he got exactly what he wanted from the American government and one of the world's most powerful corporations.

Insight into the forces that have shaped U.S. relations with the Middle East

"America's Kingdom" by Robert Vitalis is a deeply fascinating history of the U.S. in Saudi Arabia in the mid 20th century. Mr. Vitalis, who is an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, seeks to correct the mythmaking that has obscured the real story for far too long, dedicating many years of research to this project. The result is an exacting piece of scholarship that produces remarkable insight into the forces that have shaped U.S. relations with the Middle East.

The book is divided into two parts. The first section focuses on the labor practices of ARAMCO in Saudi Arabia. Mr. Vitalis astutely compares and contrasts the industrial practices of other U.S.-based extractive industries to find that ARAMCO simply imposed upon its Saudi clients what had already been learned elsewhere: namely, to divide and conquer the local labor force; control the political process; and extract maximum profits. In this particular case, of course, Mr. Vitalis details how ARAMCO's efforts were fully supported by a U.S. government intent on pursuing its geopolitical ambitions on the world stage, in which the control of oil played no small part.

The second part tells the story of worker struggle, politics and power. Debunking the myths that had been carefully constructed by corporate public relations professionals and sympathetic government officials, Mr. Vitalis decisively shows how worker's rights were gained by popular struggle and not from enlightened corporate policies. Through Mr. Vitalis' engrossing narrative, we see how American interests came to ally itself ever more closely with the Kingdom as a means to ensuring a steady flow of oil and projecting American power into the region.

Julian Henriques is currently senior lecturer in the Department of Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London. He was previously senior lecturer for Film and Television at CARIMAC, at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. His previous publications include the joint authorship of Changing the Subject: Psychology, Social Regulation and Subjectivity. He also wrote and directed the feature film "Babymother," a reggae musical.

Outstanding

I've been fascinated by fluvial geomorphology for more than two decades, and the topic has routinely been a part of my professional engineering practice. I thought it would be nice to do a comprehensive review of the latest textbook-level thinking on the topic, and I found this book by Ro Charlton to be ideal for that purpose. More specifically, the book is well organized, the writing is clear, the graphics are ample and effective, and the level of detail is "just right" (sufficient for everyone other than specialists, hence the "fundamentals" title). In other words, I learned from this book, and I also enjoyed the learning process.

Unfortunately, the book does reinforce my impression that fluvial geomorphology is still at a relatively immature stage which is mostly just descriptive, with few practically useful predictive models to be found, and with models being more qualitative than quantitative. Of course, this is a consequence of the inherent complexity of streams, not a fault of the book (which is only telling it like it is).

The bottom line is that I recommend this book to anyone seeking an overview of the fundamentals of fluvial geomorphology. I know of no better book for that purpose, and I've looked around fairly diligently.

If you are interested in a book on fluvial geomorphology, and who isn't, then this is a great book. Concepts are explained well and there are some great pictures in it. I really enjoyed this book and I had a great professor at UGA, so 5 starts for the book and geomorphology.

Good Book for Great Kids

This book's tone feels like that of an older sister who had kids a few years before you did and no longer sweats the small stuff, concentrating instead on raising children she loves AND likes. It is easy to forget the basics of what makes a happy kid in the hysteria and panic of being a new parent, but this book reminds readers that the whole purpose of creating a family is to enjoy each other's company and personalities as much as possible every single day. The Modern Mother's Handbook is full of common-sense solutions to life's little issues, and is a book I could read in one sitting but then refer to often. I highly recommend it to any parent or grandparent or caregiver.

Breathtaking Beauty

This is an extraordinary collection of art - comprehensive and diverse, spanning a significant portion of human history. Brief descriptions and explanatory text are sprinkled about but the greatest pleasure, in my opinion, derives from the gorgeous reproductions of art related to alchemy and mysticism.
I actually own two copies of this book. One that I peruse regularly and another that I shall keep as a spare should my first wear out. It is an excellent gift - very uplifting and immensely inspiring.
The subject of alchemy has been somewhat cheapened in our time - reduced to a few basic - often misrepresented - ideas and thrown about by simple minds with incoherent ideas. Few people have encountered the breadth of the subject and the contributions it has made to human civilizations. The inspiration it has provided artists and scientists is immense and this book captures quite a bit of this significance.
The author neither advocates existing belief in alchemy and mysticism, nor denies it. It is a historical perspective - largely relayed through imagery - celebrating the great beauty of the subject and the complexities it once contained.

Short version of the original book

Why do I give this book only 2 stars? I don't agree with the way this book is marketed. Watch out for ordering this book, as there are two books of the same title, author and publisher. What's the difference? One of the books has the word 'icons' on it and has only 192 pages from the original book. The original book has 712 pages. Check that the ISBN's match for what you are after. I made the mistake of buying this book from a site that did not list the page numbers and went off the title, publisher, author and picture on the front cover. Since first writing this review, I have now returned to say that I have the original 712 paged book and am very happy with it. When it comes to a book like this, why settle for second best?

A Museum should have better reproductions.

High praise that somebody said she owned two copies, one as a spare. I agree that this is a nice book to have as a reference, and I'm sure it must be the largest collection of "Hermetick" and "Alchymical" images presently available under one cover. That said, it's pretty small (although to produce this in a large volume would probably put its price out of the range of the average enthusiast), the colors are often badly reproduced, and the text is only excusable because nobody expects much in the way of text from Taschen. The main thing you have here is convenience. I have a large enough collection of books that I can track down superior examples of most of these images...but I have to track them down. With this book, I just flip through the pages. As a companion to this book I would suggest either (preferably, if you can find it) "Alchemy: the Medieval Alchemists and Their Royal Art" by Johannes Fabricius, or (failing that) "The Golden Game: Alchemical Engravings of the Seventeenth Century" by Stanislas Klossowski de Rola, for a better look at the engravings specifically. Also, "Art and Symbols of the Occult" by James Wasserman has the best color reproductions I've seen of the lavishly-painted sixteenth-century alchemical manuscript "Splendor Solis," amidst many other amusing curiosities.

When there was very little money for food she made risotto with nettles collected from the roadside. She overcame many problems learned new skills and discovered that money is not important, and the only things in life that matters are health, happiness and her children. Jill's story is delivered with an ever present hint of humour, because, she says, "Without laughter life wouldn't be funny!"

The diary of a single parent abroad

I read Jill Peningtons self published book in one sitting.Her story is real, and I can't remember when I last read such an honest account of life for someone struggling with so many issues that we might experience at some time in our own lives,
and with such a sense of humour and optimism.I found her story impressively informative given her financial difficulties were such a distraction.After having read so much about living abroad and all the learning experiences that are documented by writers I found this story encouraging,uplifting and at times truely hilarious

another night of sleep vanished....

I began this book after supper one day expecting to read for a couple of hours and then put it down to go to sleep. Instead I welcomed the new day, with the lightening sky as I finished the last chapter. I did not expect to be captivated by this story but needless to say, I was.

I have read quite a few accounts of people living abroad and, in fact, that is how I spent the first 20 years of my own life. What I didn't expect is to become so involved with this writer and her children and the people who surround her in her adopted country, Italy.

Because this is a memoir I try to stay away from commenting on particular characters as they are real people, living and breathing humans (well some of them are). Let me just say that, in my opinion, this writer faced some amazing challenges with grace, humour and maybe a glass or two of wine.

I admire her ability to keep the health and welfare of her children at the forefront of each of her decisions. Hard to do when all the decisions and responsibilities fall onto a single set of shoulders. I admire her ability to find something to laugh about when other, more violent options, might feel preferable. In general, through some very trying times, our author raised 3 children from childhood to the cusp of their adult lives. We each make choices, that in hindsight we would change in the future, but that is never an option and we continue to make the best of each situation. It seems to me that this writer is very good at doing that.

I enjoyed learning about the renovation of two very different types of home. Being introduced to life in rural Italy, not one of the countries that I lived in though we did visit. Ms. Pennington's prose allowed me to absorb some of the native beauty of the country that she chose to call home. Her love of her new lifestyle, despite all the challenges, shows throughout the tale. I wish the book had continued but am glad that there is a forum to keep "in touch" this this brave and amazing woman.

Wonderful courageous lady, rotten husband.

I loved this true to life story by Jill Pennington. What a heroine. What a nasty low life husband! Putting up with all his antics before the divorce and certainly after the divorce was heroic in itself. I admire her strength in never beating up on him in front of her children and although she did cave in to his antics in pitting the children against their mother by buying them lots of things they didn't really need, but never seeing they were properly fed, housed or much of anything else certainly tells what a jerk he was. I love it that he is trying to stop the book from being published. Ha! I hope she makes a mint off the book and he doesn't see one red cent of it. He's in my opinion a real Schmuck and deserves all the rotten luck he can get! Good luck Jill. Hope you write a sequel. Would love to see how you are doing now.

About the Author
Mike Seeds was a professor of physics and astronomy at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, from 1970 until his retirement in 2001. In 1989 he received F&M College's Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching. Mike's love for the history of astronomy led him to create upper-level courses on archaeoastronomy and on the Copernican Revolution ("Changing Concepts of the Universe"). His research interests focused on variable stars and automation of astronomical telescopes. Mike is coauthor with Dana Backman of Horizons: Exploring the Universe, 12th edition (2012); Universe: Solar Systems, Stars, and Galaxies, 7th edition (2012); Stars and Galaxies, 8th edition (2013); The Solar System, 8th edition (2013); and ASTRO, 2nd edition (2013), all published by Cengage. He was senior consultant for creation of the 20-episode telecourse accompanying his book Horizons: Exploring the Universe.

Dana Backman taught in the physics and astronomy department at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, from 1991 until 2003. He invented and taught a course titled "Life in the Universe" in F&M's interdisciplinary Foundations program. Dana now teaches introductory Solar System astronomy at Santa Clara University and introductory astronomy, astrobiology, and cosmology courses in Stanford University's Continuing Studies Program. His research interests focus on infrared observations of planet formation, models of debris disks around nearby stars, and evolution of the solar system's Kuiper belt. Dana is employed by the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, as director of education and public outreach for SOFIA (the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) at NASA's Ames Research Center. Dana is coauthor with Mike Seeds of Horizons: Exploring the Universe, 14th edition (2018); Universe: Solar Systems, Stars, and Galaxies, 7th edition (2012); Stars and Galaxies, 8th edition (2013); The Solar System, 8th edition (2013); and ASTRO, 2nd edition (2013), all published by Cengage.
