From the Inside Flap
In an economy marked by weak job reports, fewer start-ups, and more layoffs and outsourcing, traditional full-time employment is disappearing. Increasingly, in its place are short-term assignments, contract work, and freelance jobs—the gig economy.
Millions of people are actively choosing this alternate path: developing the skills and attitude to strike out on their own and tap into the many opportunities the gig economy offers. In the process, they’re buffering themselves from the whims of bosses and fluctuating fortunes of organizations, while creating a flexible schedule and greater income security, in its own way, than a traditional full-time job can provide.
The Gig Economy takes you inside this challenging yet promising work world and shows you how to manage the risks while maximizing the rewards. The book offers a counternarrative to the doomsday reports that dominate media reports and policy debates by highlighting how professionals in diverse fields can thrive. Best yet, it reveals effective, long-term strategies to make the gig economy work for you.
Grounded in research and packed with exercises and illuminating anecdotes, this eye-opening book explains how to:
• Create your own security by cultivating multiple sources of income, new skills, and your own safety net
• Accurately assess risks and develop a plan to reduce your fears
• Finance time off between gigs—travel, volunteer, or pursue your passions
• Rebuild your calendar to take control of your time
• Increase financial flexibility by reducing fixed costs and boosting income and savings
• Connect with people who can steer you toward good opportunities, and stop wasting time on outdated networking tactics
• Live the life you want based on your priorities and vision of success
• And much more.
The world of work is rapidly changing. Rather than passively watching it happen, you can learn the best ways to shift gears and embrace new models of working. The Gig Economy guides you each step of the way as you build a career that offers autonomy, flexibility, and ultimately, stability on your own terms.

TONS of know-how & TONS of exercises!
By Amazon Customer
This book is packed with tons of practical knowledge to make the leap from full-time employee to well paid worker who is in control of your own vision of success. With exercises to take the theoretical concepts into the real world, the book is broken up into manageable concepts that are truly applicable.
Mulcahy is obviously a seasoned Gig Economy worker. She has years of experience and draws on engaging anecdotes to bring a picture of the Gig Economy to life. It's not dry, it's not opaque. It's just a really solid read on how to get things done and start making the money you want, taking more time off and doing work that actually matters to you. Great read. I'm buying a copy for my sister (an artist) for Christmas!

My favorite section was how to take more time off -- ...
By Joanne P.
If you've ever thought of quitting your job and living a completely different life, this book is for you.
EYE-OPENING and compelling guide to a whole new way of working. I wasn't sure the Gig Economy was for me, but after reading this book and doing the exercises, I now have a real plan to start working independently over the next year. The most valuable part of this book for me was the last section that covers all the financial concerns I had about the Gig Economy - benefits, income, debt, and saving for retirement. My favorite section was how to take more time off -- part of my new plan is to take 4 weeks off next summer! This is by far the most interesting and life-changing book I've read all year!

A Business Book Worth Reading
By Geoff Considine
This book starts to fill a huge gap in the business press. The economy has shifted dramatically in the last decade, with more and more people doing their work in an arrangement other than the traditional employee-employer model. The move to a different kind of work relationship has profound implications for every aspect of life. This book presents a framework for thinking about the new model for work and working relationships--something that anyone considering a jump to self-employment will benefit from.
I have been a consultant for 15 years and I have lived through this incredible evolution in which companies are now far more interested in finding the best person for the job than just the best person they can find nearby. We have a world of work that is far less constrained by geography.
For young people, in particular, being aware of this new conceptual framework for work is of considerable value.
