Because it is quite old, both the style and the subject are challenging in places. Worth the work, however.

Long winded, repetitive

The author drills to death philosophical concepts, e.g. epistemology, metaphysics, idealism v materialism, in an attempt to demonstrate from first principles the superiority of "scientific thought" over other more speculative and non rigorous ways of thinking. He seems to tangle himself in this notions, in the end only making a few compelling points. I was expecting a more technical treatment of the state of scientific thought in the turn of the 20th century, which is only touched on in the second half and only w respect to a few problems in mechanics and electromagnetism. Perhaps my expectations were just off, but I found this to be a pretty tiring and repetitive read.
