Broad Overview

This book provides a very broad overview of all energy topics. Much of the information could probably be found in a more up-to-date form from the internet. The first section seems straight from the EIA's annual energy report. Do not purchase this book as an day-to-day guide for operations, calculations and benchmarks. Do buy this book if you're looking for a general description of energy topics.

I say this as a mechanical engineer as the electrical sections do seem to go into more depth.

I teach power plant technology in an applied sciences college of a large urban university. One of the ongoing challenges of teaching is finding a comprehensive textbook. Although not perfect as a textbook this is a great reference for developing student's foundation in power plant technology

i am a mechanical engineer working for the power generation industry. as one grows up in professional line, the responsibility also grows. as a mechanocal engineer i have been always reluctant to see the electrical aspect of the power generation until one day i have to take important decision concerning the electrical aspect of the power plant. this hand book came to my great help & stisfaction and took me through most of the electrical engg aspects related to power generation in a very very simple way. Topics like the harmonics, selection and imporatntace of many basic electrical components have been very well covered.i am glad to go through such a book. i would imagine such hand book is a must for practicing power engineers.

Milkowski's mechanistic construal of computation allows him to show that no purely computational explanation of a physical process will ever be complete. Computationalism is only plausible, he argues, if you also accept explanatory pluralism. Milkowski sketches a mechanistic theory of implementation of computation against a background of extant conceptions, describing four dissimilar computational models of cognition. He reviews other philosophical accounts of implementation and computational explanation and defends a notion of representation that is compatible with his mechanistic account and adequate vis � vis the four models discussed earlier. Instead of arguing that there is no computation without representation, he inverts the slogan and shows that there is no representation without computation -- but explains that representation goes beyond purely computational considerations. Milkowski's arguments succeed in vindicating computational explanation in a novel way by relying on mechanistic theory of science and interventionist theory of causation.

Perfect for neuroscience researchers, not for a general audience

This is not a general audience book. It argues nuances of Detailed terminology of the field is used without definition or explanation. He explains what he thinks is wrong with philosophies competing with his own, but never clearly defines his own. That's typical for philosophy, but it doesn't help the general reader.

That said, it's very concise and well written. Some of my peers in a reading group, actively practicing in areas of cognitive neuroscience, thought the book was perfect. I depended more on their explanations than on the book.

Rhythm, rhyme and colorful illustrations make learning shapes exciting and fun

What a fun story with bright, colorful pictures to teach shapes and that you can put shapes together to make new things. Its rhyme, repetition and rhythm give it zip when read out loud. My first grader said, "It's like tanagrams with paint and paper!" We first read this as a library book, and she asked to buy it because it "gave [her] the idea to build a whole neighborhood!" I love the fact that it taught her something AND inspired her to go and build her own creations. The reading level is the middle of first grade. The rhyme and repetition make it especially approachable for first graders and some kindergarteners.

About the Author

Surya Santoso, Ph.D., is a senior power systems engineer at Electrodek Concepts, Inc. His primary interests involve modeling of transients and harmonic phenomena and development of intelligent systems algorithms for power quality data analysis. Santoso is a senior member of the IEEE

Mark F. McGranaghan is vice president of sales and marketing for Electrodek Concepts, Inc. He has BSEE and MSEE degrees from the University of Toledo and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. McGrahaghan was vice chairman of the IEEE SCC 22 Power Quality Standards Coordinating Committee and a technical advisor for the IEC SC77A (International Power Quality Standards).

Roger C. Dugan is a senior consultant with Electrodek Concepts, Inc. He has a BSEE degree from Ohio University and an ME degree in electric power engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Dugan has nearly 40 years’ experience in electric power quality and distribution system analysis. He was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his work in harmonics and transients.

H. Wayne Beaty is the former managing editor of Electric Light and Power and editor of McGraw-Hill's Standard Handbook of Electrical Engineering, Thirteenth Edition.

Practical and enlighting. Take the mystery out of Power Quality.

Most books on power engineering related subjects have not been very helpful in my experience. The typical text being heavy on theory and math or just too generic to be of use. This book was a plesent suprise on being both educational and yet very practical. Now I feel much more comfortable in analizing and troubleshoot power quality issues in our plant and can explain the concepts to others. Expereince is what makes a master and this book will give you the tools to start in that direction. If you have a need to be working on power quality issues or just want to understand power quality better then this book is for you.

Good book!

I checked out an earlier edition of this book (light blue colored cover) from the school library and really enjoyed it. It introduced me to Utilities industry language describing indices of power distribution reliability (interruptions and outages), like SAIFI, SAIDI, and CAIDI.

Although I would have liked more detail on correcting reactive power (when unwanted) I still thought the presentation was clear and cogent. I would recommend this book to the student or anyone interested in power system quality. I'll put it in my Wish List.
