Helpful intro to Anglican theology

This was a great introduction to the concepts and history of Anglican theology. Words that kept leaping out at me were "authority" and "contested". The author maps out the issues the English church dealt with regarding tradition, scripture, and determining what sort of theology and practice were deemed authoritative. The issue of scriptural authority is one that every tradition wrestles with, especially in the Reformed and Protestant traditions. The author also points out many times through the book that everything the Anglican tradition has done has been contested in one way or another as it worked to walk a middle path between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. Everything is contested and nuanced, so don't approach a book like this thinking you'll walk away with any black-and-white answers. That just isn't how Anglicans do things.

Long winded, repetitive

The author drills to death philosophical concepts, e.g. epistemology, metaphysics, idealism v materialism, in an attempt to demonstrate from first principles the superiority of "scientific thought" over other more speculative and non rigorous ways of thinking. He seems to tangle himself in this notions, in the end only making a few compelling points. I was expecting a more technical treatment of the state of scientific thought in the turn of the 20th century, which is only touched on in the second half and only w respect to a few problems in mechanics and electromagnetism. Perhaps my expectations were just off, but I found this to be a pretty tiring and repetitive read.

Gr 2-4-Leaving England in 1637 with his wife, two sons, and a dog, William intends to build a house just like his father's. Good intentions fall aside as the man discovers that the environment in the New World is different and requires new ways of thinking. When summer brings heat, he must dig a cellar to store food or it will rot. The dry autumn forces William to replace the thatch on his roof with shingles that won't catch on fire from chimney sparks. During winter's low temperatures, he finds that he needs a larger fireplace and must pitch the roof at a steeper angle so that it won't collapse under heavy snow. Lessons learned keep the family alive and healthy. Double-page spreads include detailed watercolor paintings on one side and readable text on the other. Each text page also includes a delightful, small pen-and-ink drawing of the boys (and dog) playing, building a lean-to, fishing, watching wild geese, and enjoying the snow. As the narrative tells of the building and rebuilding of the house, the illustrations relate another complementary story. Careful observation of the accurate paintings lends perspective and information on daily life and items from clothing and tools to furniture and children's play. Howard combines social history and a moral on adapting to change in this story of how one early settler's dream of re-creating the house he left behind in England is blasted to bits by the harsh realities of life in the colonies. It's 1637 and William and his family have just arrived in New England. They set about building a thatched-roof cottage like the one they left behind. They are pleased with their new home, but as the seasons change the house must change: the hot New England summer calls for a cellar; the drier climate means cedar shingles on the roof; the snowier, colder winter demands a bigger fireplace. The changes are explained in a way youngsters will easily understand: with each climate change, William's wife exclaims: "Something must be done," and the family solves the problem. Day's engaging watercolors show details of house building and of colonial family life, as clever, black-and-white insets on text pages follow the adventures of William's two sons. Becoming American from the beginning

William arrives in Massachusetts in the seventeenth century with his family. He must first build a house and he knows how to do it - just like his father's house back in England. He proceeds, but must make various modifications along the way to compensate for the harsher climate as well as using available materials. When his cousins arrive later and see his completed house, they don't think he has built an English house at all - but William and his family have a fine American home. The book is beautifully illustrated and provides a sense of how New England's early settlers lived. Not only did they have to build their houses, but they had to make their furniture if they couldn't afford to have it shipped to them.

Smashing!

I loved the book! As an adult, I enjoyed the story. It was a great portrayal of early life in New England and the underlying theme of change was well done. I envision the book as a great story to be read to young children as well as a wonderful book for a school age child to read. What a great holiday gift this will be!

The evolution of a New World house

A beautiful and simple story of William, who wanted to build a house in the New World like the one he grew up in in England. At first he makes a great English house but as the differences between England and America become apparent (warmer, windier, more snow...) he had to make changes to the house to fit the climate. In the end a cousin from England arrives and asks 'What kind of a house is this?' All is well as you see in the last drawing that the cousin is building a 'New World house' next to William's.

Side images in pen and ink show sweet images of William's two children as they are exploring their new environment.

My sons are 9yo and while this book is probably written for children younger, it still has value for them as we discussed the changes William made to his house and why.

I am an ABIM-certified internist/hospitalist physician, & I was interestd in bedside ultrasound vascular procedures for internists/hospitalists at the time. I requested a nook/kindle ebook version from amazon & they complied, which is now also available by the way.
This book covers the field of Vascular Medicine pretty well in a case-based format. I will say that it goes far beyond the basic scope i sought, though i also thought that at the start of each section, the basics are covered quite well, as i was expecting from a case-based atlas & text of the field.
However, I believe that the level of depth & detail that is both illustrated & developed in the text as each section progresses is ultimately better suited for vascular radiologists, interventionalists and surgeons who specialize in that field.

It Takes 2 To Tango

Book 2 in the continuing story of John & Sylvia is just as riveting as Book 1 Living Apart Together. Again great length as well as great plot.

It is hard to keep a marriage together especially when one partner is the marriage is submissive & one over bearing. And this author hits the nail on the head you do grow apart if you have nothing any longer in common once your children are grown.

I'm a strong woman & I would NOT let my child dictate my marriage to me nor would I have interfered with my parents marriage. In this sequel the children are way to involved in their parents lives.

Again I started reading this book where I left off in the middle around Midnight it's 3:40AM & I just finished it now I have to wait for book 3 entitled John. I not sure I can wait that long.

If you like reading books that are somewhat based on reality you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

So now I have to buy Dear John?

700 pages later, still nothing was ironed out. While I enjoyed the book, there was so much repetition: John is a vanilla tight-ass and Sylvie is a wimpy slob. I kept reading, enjoying, reading, enjoying, wondering how Cornwall would be resolved, but it wasn't even brought up again. I loved Sylie's evolution; how she was progressing into the woman she always wanted to be, but I really didn't like the continued whining of either main character. I looked forward to how the marriage would work out, but I never found out. The book, now series, just ends. Now buy the third installment. I feel that if I purchase the next book, nothing will still be resolved and have to read the continued carping. I wouldn't mind buying the next book if the prior books had showed proper endings, with new escapades to enjoy. Now, I just feel like I was gypped.
