The Art of Failure: The Anti Self-Help Guide, by Neel Burton

We spend most of our time and energy chasing ‘success', such that we have little left over for thinking and feeling, being and relating. As a result, we fail in the deepest possible way. We fail as human beings.

The Art of Failure explores what it means to be successful, and how – if at all – true success can be achieved.

Dr Neel Burton is a psychiatrist and philosopher who lives and teaches in Oxford, England. His other books include The Meaning of Madness and Plato’s Shadow, both also with Acheron Press.

Review
An extraordinarily wide ranging mix of psychology and philosophy covering most of human behaviour from madness to happiness and the meaning of life, and encoutering ghosts and death on the way ... Brilliant. Neel Burton has already won several prizes ... and this volume deserves another. --The British Medical Association

The book's basic premise is that our definition of success is deeply flawed, presenting us with the false goals of material comfort, fame, power and hedonism. In contrast, Burton argues, Western philosophical and spiritual traditions have largely been in agreement that true happiness lies in accepting 'failure'; that we are limited, mortal, subject to frequent and unforeseen setbacks, in the face of which we do better to develop virtues of honesty, friendship, patience, and moderation. --Gareth Southwell, philosopher and writer

This book saved my life.
By Ms. Riot
I am a young academic suffering my first bout of major depression due to the break up of a long term relationship and a poor career choice. The title of the book drew me in because at this moment I indeed feel like a total "failure". All of the cognative psychology self-help books my therapist recommened I read while battling (or wading) through my depression are simplistic, banal, unintelligent and honestly not worth the paper they were printed on. This book is indeed the anti-self-help book and thank goodness it is. The book itself uses many literary, psychological, and philosophic allusions in its rhetoric and might not be that useful for readers who are not use to prose that is cross disaplinary. I, on another hand, love this book. I bought it for the kindle on my smart phone and spent the entire evening devouring it... I now have some new perspective on my life, when for the past few months I have been waking up every morning literally wishing I was not alive wondering how I had gotten myself into the situation that I am in. This book saved my life, and my therapist is an idiot who gets paid too much.

Real success
By Dennis Littrell
This book is a precursor of sorts to Dr. Burton's recently published "Hide and Seek: The Psychology of Self-Deception." In both books much of the same ground is covered, and indeed there is some repetition; however "The Art of Failure" is more clearly about what to do about the human predicament while "Hide and Seek" is more about laying out what the problem is.

And what is the problem? The problem, as the Buddha expressed it some twenty-five hundred years ago, is that life as it is usually lived is unsatisfactory. Consequently Burton's title is doubly ironic. First, what is called failure is in fact success, and what is "anti self-help" really is self-help.

What I especially like about the way Burton writes is his ability to make his case using evidence and rationale from academic or clinical psychology and from philosophic and religious traditions.

Let's begin with one of the most important ideas in the book:

"As human beings we have a tendency to think of our personhood as something concrete and tangible, something that exists in the `real world' and that extends through time. However, it is possible that our personhood is in fact nothing more than a product of our minds, merely a convenient concept of schema that enables us to relate our present self with our past, future, and conditionals selves, and so to lend to our life a sense of coherence and meaning. This concept or schema amounts to our sense of self, which is the very basis of our ego, and which is, therefore, tantamount to one gigantic ego defence, or the sum total of all our ego defences." (pp. 92-93)

Similarly from a Buddhist perspective, Burton writes: "An analogy that is often used to describe this process of rebirth or samsara is that of a flame passing from one candle to the next. This cycle of rebirth can only be broken if the empirical, changing self is able to transcend its subjective and distorted image of the world, which is both conscious and unconscious, and which has the `I am' conceit as a crucial reference point. This, then, is heaven or nibbana. Nibbana, as I see it, rests on the understanding that consciousness is a sequence of conscious moments rather than the continuous consciousness of the `I am' conceit. Each moment is an experience of an individual mind-state such as a perception, feeling, or thought; the consciousness of an empirical self is made up of the birth and death of these individual mind-states, and `rebirth' is nothing more than the persistence of this process." (p. 100)

Interesting is how Burton develops his argument using stories about famous Greek philosophers and some famous psychiatrists from the psychoanalytical school. Burton is well read in these areas and enjoys recalling bits of their lives. I especially enjoyed what he wrote about Diogenes the Cynic.

"Diogenes was not impressed with his fellow men, not even with Alexander the Great, who came to meet him one morning while he was lying in the sunlight. When Alexander asked him whether there was any favour he might do for him, he replied, "Yes, stand out of my sunlight."

"In another account of the conversation, Alexander found Diogenes looking attentively at a pile of human bones. Diogenes explained, `I am searching for the bones of your father (King Philip of Macedon) but cannot distinguish them from the bones of a slave.'" (p. 107)

Following this we get Burton's thesis (more or less) and the rationale for his ironic title: "Diogenes taught by living example that wisdom and happiness belong to the person who is independent of society. He was, I think, a shining example of the art of failure." (p. 108) "Other shining examples of the art of failure among the philosophers includes Pythagoras and Heraclitus." (p. 145)

It's apparent that what Burton means as the art of failure is the preference for successes other than those usually valued such as fame, wealth and power. We can see this as Burton recalls the famous story of Miletus who was able to predict a bumper olive crop one year inspiring him to take out a lease on all the olive presses in Miletus. He made a fortune, "simply to prove to the Milesians that a thinker could easily be rich, if only he did not have better things to do with his time." (p. 145)

In Chapter 8 entitled "Madness" Burton turns his attention to some of the greats in psychoanalytical theory. His recall of the life of Carl Jung is particularly interesting. Burton notes that Jung at one point went through a "highly creative state of mind that verged on psychosis..." while being married to "Emma Rauschenbach, the daughter of a rich industrialist." Burton then coyly writes, "Despite being happily married, he felt that he needed a muse as well as a home-maker, observing that `the pre-requisite of a good marriage...is the license to be unfaithful'. The marital strife that resulted from his affairs, and particularly from his affair with a former patient called Toni Wolff, contributed to his troubled state of mind..." (p. 123)

Part of what this book is about and what it celebrates is courage. Hemingway famously said that courage is grace under pressure. I like that definition. I also like Burton's take, which is revealed throughout the book, but can be thought of as a kind of wisdom. He writes, "...[I]f a person is to become fully conscious of his individuality, he needs to come to terms with the basis of fear and anxiety, which is death, and then to renounce his acquired sense of self, which amounts to metaphorical suicide." (p. 109) (Although I think for some people the basis of fear and anxiety is pain itself not death.)

What we fear varies from person to person but as Burton points out generally our phobias are of natural dangers our ancestors faced while what is really dangerous today are manmade hazards like motor vehicles and electric cables. (p. 52) Two thoughts jump to mind: (1) I find it easier to think about suicide from a gunshot to the head than about jumping from a high place. (2) I twice watched a coyote look both ways before crossing a street.

There was a part of the book that I found a bit unclear and another part a bit overdrawn. The overdrawn was his search mainly among the ancient Greeks for an understanding of friendship. However I did like this observation: "...the number of people with whom one can sustain a perfect friendship is very small, first, because reason and virtue are not to be found in everyone (never, for example, in young people, who are not yet wise enough to be virtuous)..." (For more see page 157.)

And I was a bit mystified by Burton's brain transfer thought experiment in the chapter he entitles "Ghosts." He has created a person dubbed Brownson who exists because the brains of two men were switched during a botched operation. Burton writes:

"Let us imagine that Brownson's brain is now divided into two equal halves or hemispheres and that each hemisphere is transplanted into a brainless body. After the operation, two people awake who are psychologically continuous with Brownson...are they then both Brownson?"

Obviously, I would say, half a brain does not make a whole person (or keep one alive for very long). If the thought experiment were changed a bit so as to absolutely duplicate the Brownson brain and put one into one body and the other into another body, then Burton's question would make sense. His conclusion that "Most people would argue...they are not in fact the same person..." seems reasonable since they have differ bodies and indeed we are not merely our brains. Even more reasonable is the conclusion that "in time [they] will develop into two very different people."

Interested readers might compare Burton's "Brownson" thought experiment to the "swampman" thought experiment by philosopher Donald Davidson (in which I think he comes to a mistaken conclusion) and the "self-identity" thought experiment in my book "The World Is Not as We Think It Is" in which I think I come to the right conclusion.

Let me close this rather long review of an excellent, very readable and challenging book with a quote from neurologist, psychiatrist and holocaust survivor Victor Frankl that Burton presents on page 101:

"Only to the extent that someone is living out this self transcendence of human existence is he truly human or does he become his true self. He becomes so, not by concerning himself with his self's actualization, but by forgetting himself and giving himself, overlooking himself and focusing outward."

--Dennis Littrell, author of "The World Is Not as We Think It Is"

To Be Human
By Andrew G
The Art of Failure is an uncommonly valuable book because it pinpoints the faults of contemporary definitions of failure and success, helping readers realign their values to match the things that lead to fundamental happiness. Unfortunately the book is challenging to many of the core beliefs that drive contemporary humans and its conclusions are difficult to implement in proportion to their truth. As such, it appropriately calls itself an 'anti-self help guide' and promises no easy tricks to success among one's peers.

The previous reviewer is correct that the author draws from (primarily though not exclusively Western) philosophy and psychology, but The Art of Failure is in no way a summary or a survey of either of these. The author ties together relevant and interesting philosophical and social theories in a tight arc that clearly leads to a realization of the fuller possibilities attendant to being human, as well as how one can achieve these personally. The examples from psychology and philosophy are not only engrossing for their own sakes but are often remarkably novel repackagings of material from the the intellectually sensitive minds of the past in different and unusual forms. I found that the results not only elucidated the ideas of those psychologists and philosophers but gave them dimensions I had not before realized. On this account alone the book would be worth reading.

By far the book's most important impact is that it speaks to that voice inside that wonders at the end of the day how it has gotten here and whether it needs to be here at all. It rang true for me on this deep level usually reserved for literature and art; if I can implement only some of the conclusions in my life, I will be better for it.

Splendid book.
By Esteban 'EvansGreen' Peir
This is a book about the C# language and its uses rather than a game development book. And it's a bloody good one. I start making this statement in order to avoid confusion, as at the end of the day, it's called "Player's guide".

The reason why, is because it sort of points you in the right direction about the uses of the different functions and resources of the language when it comes to writing games. But then again, what this book will provide you is a solid understanding of the C# language, not only the basics, but pretty much everything you need to write thorough, elegant code as you make your first games.

About the author, RB Whitaker is the author of an acclaimed series of free XNA tutorials, that I personally consider one of the most well thought out I've found on the internet. I've used them a lot, and at first I bought the book partially by curiosity, partially by grattitude for his tremendous work in instructing people on the use of XNA and C# as a game development tool.

I couldn't regret it less. To be entirely honest, and after reading it from cover to cover, I have to say it's the best "condensed" and "readable" C# book I have in my programming library. I sometimes even use it instead of "Pro C# 5.0 and the .Net 4.5 Framework", to make some consultations.

Again, congratulations to the author, and I fully recommend this book to any beginner or intermediate level C# programmer. I'm sure you will get knowledge out of it.

THE book to learn C# programming!
By Amazon Customer
I started XNA programming a few years back and found RB's website and his tutorials over a year ago. He has some of the best C# and XNA free tutorials out there. I would recommend checking them out.

When I heard he was writing a book, I was really excited because his tutorials are great. I was surprised, the book was even better than I expected.

Before getting into the book, let me describe my background with C#. I've been programming longer than I care to remember in C++, Assembler, VB, and even doing some light professional programming in C#. So, I'm not exactly new to C# or programming. Still, I never actually learned C#. I had been doing VB for years and switched over to VB.Net when it came out. Between that and knowing C++, I woke up one morning and realized that I already knew C# and just started programming. Because of that, there have been some gaps in my C# knowledge.

I actually wanted to be the first one to review this book because I was so excited about it. I immediately bought it and started reading. This book is less "dry" reading than most programming books, but its still a programming book. It had been so long since I had sat down and read a programming book cover to cover that I had forgotten how much work it can be trying to read a technical tome. But again, I would say this book was as easy as any other programming book I've ever read to get through.

I made it about 2/3rds of the way through the book, even learning a few things in spite of having been programming in C# for a few years semi-professionally. And then Microsoft abandoned XNA and I pretty much lost all interest in C# and Microsoft in general. It was actually Microsoft's decision on XNA that was mostly responsible for me never completely finishing the book and ultimately not writing the review.

But anyway, it was such a good book that I decided I should go ahead and write the review based on reading about 2/3rds of the way through it, as someone who knew C# fairly well before reading the book. That makes it a little difficult for me to take the perspective of an absolute beginner, but it appears to me that this book would be perfect for beginners as well.

Basically, this is by far the best C# book I've read. It doesn't cover XNA at all, but if you wanted to do XNA (even though Microsoft no longer supports it) through Mono or something, I would strongly recommend reading this book first. The book is written in an understandable way so that even an absolute beginner can start with this book. And yet at the same time, it takes you through the intermediate level of C# programming all the way to the door of advanced C# programming (to go much further than this book takes you, you would have to get into the internals of Windows or Assembly language or something along those lines).

Even though the title suggests a game, this book is not about game programming (or any specific type of programming); its about learning C#. And it does not disappoint. I would recommend it for anyone from a teenager wanting to start learning programming on their own, to IT professionals that think they might have a few gaps in their knowledge. It pretty much covers everything.

And RB has a gift for teaching. He's able to take advanced concepts and make them accessible to anyone. I think that's probably the reason to buy this book over any other C# book on the market. I own a few C# books, and this one is certainly my favorite.

So, to sum it up. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn, or get better at C# programming.

Great Book for beginers
By Travis A Alt
I bought The C# 2010 for Dummies Book a few years ago. After 2 chapters, I was lost and gave up. I tried to pick up C# again, however, I bought this book instead. I am very pleased with how the author explained each topic. The author progresses the book at a very good pace, building on top of what you just learned. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out programming, anyone going to C# from another language, or any seasoned C# vet to use as a reference.

Time Passing (European Perspectives: A Series in Social Thought and Cultural Criticism), by Sylviane Agacinski

What do we mean when we say time passes? How do contingency and anachronism and other philosophical concepts bearing on time affect the more (seemingly) concrete realities of our political and cultural lives? In ways small and great, personal and cultural, we all experience the mutability of time. We feel it expand and contract, speed up and slow down, as it bends to the imperatives of memory, money, and the media. In our own time (itself a pregnant phrase) we have witnessed a disengagement with the past even as technological advances have allowed us to capture and reproduce past time as never before. How are we to make sense of this paradox?

In this wide-ranging meditation on the meaning of time, Sylvaine Agacinski weaves together discussions of Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, Freud, Heidegger, Baudelaire, Barthes, and especially Walter Benjamin―her model for the modern "passer of time"―as she traces a time line of the philosophy of time. After examining how shifting attitudes toward the passage of time have affected everything from art criticism to the development of photography to the rise of modernism itself, Agacinski concludes by proposing a rethinking of democracy that emphasizes patience in the face of our current temporal frenzy.

From Booklist
In a work first published in France in 2000, one of Europe's leading contemporary philosophers probes the meaning of time for a modern society that no longer measures its movement against either the unchanging metaphysics of traditional religion or the optimistic ideologies of historical progress. Agacinski locates that modern meaning in an intellectual openness to the uniqueness of each moment, a receptive awareness of time's irreversible flow of imaginative opportunities. The nineteenth-century Parisian Walter Benjamin serves as an exemplar of this distinctively modern temporal openness. But defining the modern experience of time requires more than a critique of earlier philosophers. Agacinski must also face the temporal challenge posed by technology--factories converting time into a cash commodity; photographs contradicting the timelessness of art. The technologies of the mass media receive particularly close scrutiny, as Agacinski warns against the feverish media compression of time that too often cuts short the community-wide dialogue needed in a healthy democracy. Difficult but rewarding reading for those interested in contemporary philosophy. Bryce Christensen

Review

Starting from the observation that 'passing' has become our way of being, that henceforth everything seems impermanent and unstable, Sylviane Agacinski tries to clarify from many different perspectives 'the ethic of the ephemeral' of this age, so elusive because it is transient and ungrounded. Along the way, she invents a style for her reflections that is both fresh and spare, and leads effortlessly from metaphysics to politics, passing through an original analysis of the aesthetic that belongs to photography.

(Le Monde)

Agacinski's essayistic style shifts focus from the metaphysics of temporality via the aesthetic status of photography, to the politics of mass media... Recommended.

(Choice)

a remarkably candid and provocative assessment...probing analysis

(Bryce Christensen, Southern Utah University Modern Age)

Review

A mine of hidden passageways, this book traces connections leading from the forbidding landscape of today's political and technological challenges to its deepest foundations in time. Weaving together cultural, philosophical, and literary insights with uncommon verve and lucidity, Agacinski probes the links and limits of contemporary mass media and democratic political representation. By means of a remarkable snap-shot of modernity in the key figures of Baudelaire, Barthes, and Benjamin, Time Passing also offers a proving ground for our own future.

How Rich People Think, by Steve Siebold

This book will teach you how rich people think. It compares the thoughts, habits and philosophies of the middle class to the world class when it comes to wealth. The differences are as extreme as they are numerous. The strategy is simple: learn how rich people think, copy them, take action and get rich. This book hits hard and never lets up. It's based on a quarter century of interviews with millionaires. It's written in unfiltered, politically incorrect language that makes the point crystal clear and easy to follow. The hundreds of millionaires interviewed for this book had nothing to gain by sharing their secrets, nor any interest in sugar-coating their advice. These people gave me unprecedented access to their lifestyle and playgrounds; from Palm Beach to Aspen. I was searching for the raw, uncensored truth about how rich people think, and they agreed to share it with me on the promise that their names never be published and their remarks never made public. I've mixed their wisdom with my words, and the result is a book so brutally honest it will shock some and inspire others. If you've ever dreamed of living a life most people only see in movies, study this book like a scientist. Freedom from financial worries and a millionaire's lifestyle is closer than you think.

LOVED IT! Transformed my thinking despite years of messages from external sources ...
By TechFanGirl
LOVED IT!

As the grandchild of a self made millionaire who repeated all my life and that of my mother (his daughter) - "watch your pennies and your dollars will take care of themselves" ... his frugal, bordering on cheap, behavior made him wealthy but what he said vs what he did in his own finances were total opposites. Before he passed away, we had an important conversation wherein he revealed he felt he had been a failure. In fact, he had co-founded a bank, been a key investor in other very successful ventures (start ups in their day) including modest real estate, investments and substantial stock in other companies and was a tremendous philanthropist. He built a very successful company and sold it at 60 while he preached to the family to be anything but self-employed which, as many know, the most common path to wealth and financial freedom.

That is why, when I found this book after reading a story distilled from Steve's chapters in Business Insider, I immediately bought the Kindle version. I could not be more THRILLED!!!

After having so much financial heresy thoughout my life from family, institutions, employers, educators, media even religious leaders - finding Steve's book with his wisely written chapters was a true God send and incredibly transformative.

I have read many other worthy books - but this one - comparing side by side what the "middle class 'masses' " believe vs the "world class" - has truly been one of the best investments I have ever made. EVER!

Unfortunately for me - I bought it several months ago and read it bit by bit - finally finishing the last 60 chapters in a matter of days. When beginning to read the chapters it took me a while to adapt my thinking and do the suggested exercises at the end of each chapter. Since I was beginning to change my thinking and internal "chatter" i.e. "keep you head down and do your job" to world class thinking - the process took some time plus lots & lots of personal journal entries. It was indeed time well spent!

During the process I discovered more about myself that I didn't realize and am very thankful for this book and the wisdom and insight Steve shares. I am moving in a much more positive direction and am excited about the future again.

As a long time small business owner - I bucked the family trend - my grandfather knew about it before he died and was proud of me. That said, through many upheavals and losses in my life, I am at a new chapter personally and professionally and now get up every day - despite the challenges - looking forward to new opportunities. I truly believe my Best Days are out in front of me ... not as a Pollyanna - but as a more informed adult, ready to tackle the hard issues and overcome my past "stinkin' thinkin' " as some call it.

Steve - thank you for this book. I look forward to your next one and, in the future if you update this one, I will buy it too.

Good but with lots of repetition
By Foboz
What I liked:
* Easy read; each chapter was only a couple of pages long
* Good insight as to how the wealthy think

What I didn't like:
* Like other "research-derived" books I've read (e.g. The Millionaire Next Door), the main points and take-aways from the book could easily be summarized in a dozen or two bullet points; instead the same points are made over again and over again across hundreds of pages (otherwise there'd be no book to sell).
* Lots of generalities with few specifics or case studies

On the balance, I thought it was good enough to earn a four star rating.

Single biggest take-away:
The average person operates from a position of scarcity and fear while the "world-class" operates from a position of optimism and abundance; this fundamental difference in world views drives many other behaviors that end up separating the haves from the have-nots.

Generously Accompanied by Resources
By Stella Carrier
How Rich People Think by Steve Siebold covers information from the multiple interviews that the author had with millionaires. The 208 pages contrast middle class thinking with what the author terms world class (millionaire viewpoints). However, one must have an open mind because he includes controversial details such as: Middle Class teaches their kids to be happy with what they have while the world class (the wealthy men and women) teaches their kids how to go for their dreams (pages 188-189). Additionally, I reluctantly admit that I now fully understand exactly what the author means when he says that the middle class only focuses on money when they need it while the world class focuses on money all the time (pages 204-205). He also generously shares some further links (various money and business subject books) for knowledge by including an additional rich resource after each of the contrasting beliefs of the middle class and wealthy class.
